GENERAL INFORMATION

THE CONFERENCE SITE

All conference sessions and most of the events will be held on the campus of the University of California at Santa Cruz, located on 2000 acres of woodlands and meadows sitting on the coastal hills above the Monterey Bay.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Lodging is available at UCSC that is immediately adjacent to the conference venue, and you are invited and encouraged to stay on campus. Hotel space is also available in Santa Cruz, several miles from campus, though it is in high demand during the summer months and tends to be fairly costly. Additionally, there is no parking near the conference, so commuters must park at a remote lot and shuttle to the conference area. Staying on campus gives you opportunities to meet informally with others, time to explore the beautiful campus environment, and the convenience of staying in the same location as most Conference sessions.

Lodging for the Sustainability Conference will be at the newly constructed Cowell and Stevenson College Apartments. A package plan has been arranged which includes lodging, meals and parking. Earliest registrants will be housed at the Cowell and Stevenson College Apartments, while later registrants may be housed in another complex on campus if the primary housing unit fills to capacity.

The Cowell and Stevenson College Apartments are newly furnished, and share a living room, kitchen and bathrooms. Stoves are disabled for the summer months, but the refrigerator is operational. All apartments contain both single- and double-occupancy rooms (all with twin-size beds.) If you choose a double room, please indicate a preferred roommate, or the Conference Office staff will assign a roommate for you. All linens are included. Due to liability and insurance restrictions, children are not permitted at the conference. There are no dogs or other pets allowed on campus.

IMPORTANT: For a guaranteed lodging space at the Conference, the registration deadline is June 1st, 2005. After that date, housing space is not promised, and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, until June 15th, 2005. No “walk-on” housing will be available.

The final conference registration deadline (conference only, no housing) is June 15th. After June 15th, 2005, you must call UCSC Conference Services at 831-459-5092 to obtain your registration confirmation.

MEALS DURING THE CONFERENCE

All meals are included as part of the registration fees for all participants. The first meal will be a reception/dinner on Sunday, June 19th, 2005, and the last meal will be lunch on Tuesday, June 21, 2005. NOTE: There will be light snacks available between 1:00 and 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, but campus dining facilities will be closed during this time.

CLIMATE AND CLOTHING

Temperate days and cool evenings preclude the need for air-conditioning. Typical Santa Cruz weather in mid June is sunny and warm, with daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s, and nighttime temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Fog occasionally covers the campus and temperatures can become quite cool, even in the summer (we recommend that you bring a jacket). The campus is situated in the hills, so a comfortable pair of walking shoes is also recommended, especially for walking tours. The attire for the Conference is casual.

GETTING TO SANTA CRUZ

Santa Cruz is located on the ocean side (west) of the Santa Cruz Mountains . Two major airports are close by on the San Francisco peninsula, and a smaller, regional airport is located in Monterey. The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is about 75 miles north (90 minutes by car) from UCSC. It is the primary international airport of the region and is served by all major airlines. The San Jose International Airport (SJC) is about 45-55 minutes from UCSC, depending on the traffic, and is served by most domestic and regional airlines, and limited service to Mexico and Canada.

The Santa Cruz Airporter Shuttle can provide transportation from both SFO and SJC to Santa Cruz . Please call 1-800-497-4997 or 831-423-1214 to make reservations and ask for the special “Conference Rate”. Tell the driver you want to go to Cowell College at UCSC. This is a commercial service and several stops may be made before arriving at UCSC. ALL SHUTTLE RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE IN ADVANCE.

If you are driving, you can reach Santa Cruz from Hwy 1 or Hwy 17. For directions to the campus, please access: http://maps.ucsc.edu/ . If you plan to come by car, whether from the airport or your home town, we encourage you to carpool. Upon your arrival, look for signs directing you to the East Remote parking lot, where you will be welcomed by conference staff.

PARKING

On-campus lodgers will receive a parking permit as part of their conference registration package. Commuters may purchase a parking permit for the conference at the rate of $5 per day. Parking on the UC Santa Cruz campus is regulated at all times, and parking permits are required. All parking will be at the East Remote lot and shuttles will be provided to the conference check in area. Note: it could take up to 45 minutes to get from a hotel to the conference after parking and taking the shuttle.

SMOKING

UCSC is a non-smoking environment. Smoking is not permitted within any public buildings on the campus. However, smoking is permitted in designated areas on the grounds.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT ( ADA ) ACCOMMODATION

If you require special accommodations for either the conference sessions, transportation, or your housing while on the UCSC campus, please let us know immediately.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

We are pleased to offer scholarships for all students wishing to attend the Conference.  Students coming from out of town may receive registration and meals/lodging for $35, and locals may receive registration and meals for $25.

All students receiving scholarships are required to complete up to 3 hours work exchange before or during the Conference.
