ABOUT
ABOUT

The 13th Annual Santa Cruz Women of Color Film and Video Festival will be held at the University of California, Santa Cruz, August 5-6, 2006. This event will be free and open to the public through the generous support of our sponsors.

The theme of this year’s Women of Color Film Festival, Regenerations, draws inspiration from the number 13 in the Mayan calendar, which symbolizes transformation, movement, and change. This event builds upon the tremendous history established by previous film festivals to bring emerging and well-established filmmakers, artists, media activists and community members to our campus.  As the longest running festival of its kind, the UCSC Women of Color Film and Video Festival has sparked dialogue across communities – locally, nationally, and trans-nationally – by providing a platform for critical explorations at the intersections of race, nation, class, gender, ethnicity, and sexuality. It has become a much anticipated and acclaimed event for its commitment to visual expression, scholarship, and activism.

Under the sponsorship of Professor Angela Davis, the Festival has shown close to 300 films by women of color as well as hosted workshops and panel discussions with filmmakers, artists, and activists.  Past festival participants have included Julie Dash, Cheryl Dunye, Lourdes Portillo Alma Lopez, and Osa Hidalgo de la Riva.  This year’s festival will feature over two dozen films by talented directors from the United States and abroad.  In addition to film screenings, this dynamic event will also feature art, photography, spoken word, and musical performances.

The Festival will be held in conjunction with the Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS) Summer Institute planned for August 2-5 whose theme is Transfronteras: Geographies and Generations.  As a space dedicated to bridging academic scholarship and community activism, MALCS is bringing together a diverse array of students, professors, and community members from all over the country. This summer will be the first time these two long-standing events will be held together at the UCSC campus.
