History

A brief history of the Women at Work Retreat

The Women at Work Retreat began as a response to a 1985 survey by the Staff to the Women's Professional Development Committee. The survey revealed a need for networking opportunities as well as workshops and activities designed to enrich the work lives of the women staff on campus. Under the approval of Chancellor Sinsheimer, the first retreat was held in the spring of 1986 at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove. Since 1993, the retreat has been held at the St. Francis Retreat Center in San Juan Bautista.

From its inception, the Women at Work Retreat has been supported by the Chancellor's Office, which provides partial funding and release time. The event is currently sponsored by the Staff HR and Equal Employment Opportunity / Affirmative Action. Campus units also provide funding for their staff to attend. Since 1992, a significant portion of the retreat budget has been generated by the fundraising activities of the Women at Work Steering Committee.

To see photos, workshops and keynote topics offered in past retreats, see the Past Retreats section.
