Conference Goals: For High School Women, Grades 8 - 12

  • Provide young women with opportunities to meet and interact with positive women role models who are active in math and science-related careers
  • Involve those with limited opportunities for success in positive experiences in mathematics and science
  • Increase the interest of young women in math and science by providing exciting and fun hands-on learning experiences
  • Encourage young women to study as much math and science as possible by showing them the benefits of education and its relevance to their lives
  • Foster awareness of career opportunities in science and math-related careers

D. Dawn Motyka, M.D. (Host/Producer "Health Matters", KUSP Radio; Senior Family Practice Physician, Scotts Valley Medical Clinic),

Dr. Evelyn Hu (Professor of Engineering at UC Santa Barbara and Director of NSF Center for Quantized Electronic Structure),

Dr. Marcia McNutt (Professor of Earth Science at UC Santa Cruz and President, Monterey Bay Area Research Institute),

Dr. MRC Greenwood (Chancellor, UC Santa Cruz, Ph.D. in Biology from the Rockefeller University).


Program Format:

  • Opening Keynote Speaker
  • Choice of Morning Workshops
  • Lunch with Invited Guests
  • Choice of Afternoon Workshops
  • Closing Session.

Sample Career Workshops:

  • Careers in Medicine (panel discussion with doctor, midwife, physician's assistant and dentist)
  • Careers in Engineering (sponsored by Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers)
  • Women Who Travel the World (careers in earth science that span the globe)

Sample Hands-on Workshops:

  • Veterinary medicine (including an exam of "Chili" the dog)
  • Weather Forecasting (computer and atmospheric science)
  • Science of Scent (biology and chemistry)
PLUS: Two adult workshops are offered for parents, counselors, and teachers.

THIS YEAR'S CLOSING SESSION INCLUDES A DRAWING FOR DOOR PRIZES FROM LOCAL SPONSORS AND WILL FEATURE: "SCIENCE IN THE MOVIES".
