Do you have a coach?
Yes, we've had at least one coach since 1998, the last couple years we've had three! Feel free to ask them a question (about UCSC or any other school you might be thinking about attending).
Where do you practice?
On the UC Santa Cruz campus athletic fields overlooking the Monterey Bay, one of the most picturesque ultimate sites in the United States. A view from the fields can be found here .
How often do you practice?
2 days/week in the fall, 3-4 days/week in the winter and spring.
How big is your team?
The A-team has ~20 players. The B-team varies in size depending on interest.
What tournaments do you attend?
In addtion to sectionals, regionals, and nationals, we attend every major tournament on the west coast (Stanford Invite and President's Day in San Diego being the 2 biggest) and occasionally get out to North Carolina for College Easterns. We also host 4-5 college and club tournaments a year. You can see what tournaments we are attending this year here .
What is UC Santa Cruz like?
In a nut shell, laid back. The weather in the fall and spring is awesome, it rains a decent amount in the winter months.
How does the team usually fair?
We usually end up in the top 3 in our section (The Nor Cal/Bay Area section usually has ~4 of the top 25 teams in the nation). In our region we usually place in the top 5. In the last 11 years, we've gone to Nationals 6 times. You can see a year by year recap here . We've been to the finals of Nationals twice and won once, we've been to the semi-finals once, and the quarter-finals 2 times. Competing in the Northwest is like no other region in the country, the top 8 teams can all beat each other on a given day. Santa Cruz is one of only 3 teams to make it to Nationals out of the newly formed Northwest region (Stanford 3 times, Santa Cruz 3 times, Oregon 2 times).
What's the Club Ultimate scene in Santa Cruz like?
There is pick-up Ultimate at least once a week (2-3 times/week in the summer), weekly Goaltimate games, there is a competitive open club team, and 3 club tournaments are hosted between April and September.
