Student Volunteer Center Internship Program (SVCIP)

The Student Volunteer Center offers an internship program for motivated UCSC students. Students intern in the SVC office on publicity, event support, and special projects affiliated with SVC. This internship program is ideal for students wishing to get involved in the behind the scenes service work at UCSC, or for students looking to gain nonprofit management experience.

SVC also offers a community based internship program. Students volunteer with a partnering organization during their weekly hours, and complete journal entries, and papers with the SVC field supervisor. In the past these students have interned with organizations such as The Marine Mammal Center, Santa Cruz Legal Aide, Community Childcare Center, and the Santa Cruz Aids Project. Students wishing to apply for this internship should apply no later than two weeks prior to the last day of instruction for the preceding quarter. This is important as that students need to set up the internship with the organization in advance.
Interns receive either two or five credits for their internship. Two credit interns work for five hours per week in addition to weekly staff meetings and special events (which are monthly in the fall, and less often during the remainder of the year). Five credit interns work ten hours per week in addition to weekly staff meetings and special events. All interns write a midterm, and final reflective paper on their experiences with SVC and within the community.

Applications are due by the first week of the quarter on a first come, first serve basis. If students wish to apply for a Student Volunteer Center Internship or the Community Partnership Internship Program, they should email volunteer@ucsc.edu to get updated information, syllabus and other course materials.
