Alternative Spring Break

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a community based service-learning program over spring break. ASB participants will assist New Orleans families that have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Students will work on damaged homes in cooperation with Tulane University. Hard work complemented by cultural and educational activities will instill an understanding of the culture, history, and social issues surrounding the consequences of Katrina. SVC hopes that this experience will allow participants to become more thoughtful and engaged citizens who will continue to work for social change.

Project

SVC will be working with SAFER (Student Advocacy for Equitable Recovery), a student-led recovery initiative run by Tulane University students in New Orleans. SAFER engages college students locally and globally in rebuilding efforts throughout New Orleans. We will be taking a first-hand look at the social, economic, historical and cultural tensions of the region in an attempt to better understand the difficulty of the recovery effort in New Orleans.
