Pre-Conference Field Trips

Sunday, June 19th

 

Natural Reserves Hiking Tour (1:00pm - 3:00pm and 4:00pm - 6:00pm)
Participants will take a moderate hike through one area of the 400-acre Natural Reserve on the upper UCSC campus. This land was set aside to preserve the natural communities for teaching, field research and natural history interpretation. These lands are a living library and laboratory and include redwood and mixed evergreen forests, seep zones & springs, coastal prairie, and chapparal communities. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Maximum participants: 40

 

Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (2:00pm - 4:00pm)
The Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (AKA “The Farm”) is a research, education, and public service program at UCSC dedicated to increasing ecological sustainability and social justice in the food and agriculture system. Situated on 25 acres, this is one of the most unique and incredible features of the campus. It is managed using organic production methods and serves as research, teaching, and training facilities for students, staff, and faculty. Maximum participants: 30

 

Arboretum (4:00pm - 6:00pm)
The Arboretum, founded in 1964, occupies one of the most propitious horticultural sites in the world. Take a tour of these beautiful gardens featuring plants native to California, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand . The climatic and topographic diversity is such as to allow experimentation with almost every species that might be grown along the coast between San Diego and Crescent City, and the diversity of the soils can scarcely be matched anywhere. Maximum participants: 30

 

CSU Moss Landing Marine Labs (1:30pm - 5:30pm)
Moss Landing Marine Laboratories' two-year old building was selected by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) as one of fifty buildings nationwide to pilot a new program for the Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) standards. It is situated on a 21-acre hillside in Moss Landing, California with breathtaking views of Monterey Bay and local wetlands. Since establishment in 1966, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) has grown an international reputation for excellence in marine science research and education. It is operated by a consortium of seven CA State University campuses (Fresno, Hayward, Monterey Bay, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, and Stanislaus). Maximum participants: 50

 

Long Marine Lab Seymour Center (2:30pm - 5:30pm)
The Seymour Marine Discovery Center is part of the Joseph M. Long Marine Laboratory, a research and education facility of UCSC. The laboratory is affiliated with the Institute of Marine Sciences, a university research unit. The lab serves as a base for field research in Monterey Bay and the ocean beyond. Institute of Marine Sciences faculty and researchers conduct marine field studies throughout the world. Highlights include three exhibit halls, 14 aquaria in two separate pods, a seawater table (touch pools), ocean-view terraces and an 87-foot blue whale skeleton. Maximum participants: 60
