Living at Stevenson

Students enjoy some quiet study time in their apartment residence room.

Stevenson students pride themselves in creating and living in a close-knit community. For most students, their personal sense of the Stevenson community grows outward: starting on their floor, moving to others in their house and eventually the whole college. To help with the adjustment to life here, we do not separate students by class level, but instead assign both upper class students and first year students throughout all eight houses. It is important to remember that while your house will likely grow to have special meaning for you, by winter quarter it is common for activities to include the college in general.

Each of our houses at Stevenson is a site for cross-cultural exchange and learning and our programming emphasizes issues of difference and identity. Individual houses and the college both offer year-round opportunities for students to participate in residential and academic programs that share and celebrate the increasingly diverse heritage of our students. Some programs, such as College Nights, Events on The Knoll, in the Stevenson Events Center, and at our popular coffee shop, bring the college community together. Other events, including speakers, movies and discussions, offer students the opportunity to learn more about themselves and each other.

There are eight separate residence houses built on two adjacent locations at Stevenson College. At each site, four houses face each other across a large central plaza. The two residential areas have come to be known as "Upper Quad" and "Lower Quad". There is no general advantage to living in one house or quad over another, though individuals may develop personal preferences over time.

Each house contains single, double, and triple rooms, as well as quad lounges. Single rooms are somewhat more expensive than the others and generally go to seniors and continuing juniors. Most students live in "traditional" double rooms which house 2 students in each. If you are a new student, you will most likely live in a double room with a roommate.

THEMED COMMUNITIES

Multicultural and Social Justice House: Casa Septima (House 7), located in the Lower Quad, is dedicated to providing opportunities that promote mutual respect and acceptance of the diversity of our students. This multicultural theme area actively creates and promotes a positive community that embraces different cultures, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. We sponsor programs and activities that bridge the gap between similarities and differences amongst our students in the Stevenson community. College staff, faculty, students and other campus resources are invited to share their ideas, perspectives, talents, and skills to help create a vibrant and enriched living experience. Casa Septima is a living/learning residential space that serves as a venue for college and campus diversity activities.  Our house is structured towards multicultural and diversity programming including: film showings, arts and crafts, potlucks, cultural dinners, and political/educational discussions. We are very excited to have this community at Stevenson College! "The great organizations celebrate the differences." -Gil Atkinson

The Outdoor Adventure House: The Outdoor Adventure House, located in House 3 in Upper Quad, is housed by residents who are interested in actively appreciating and becoming more engaged with the natural environment. The House offers regular opportunities to enjoy the many outdoor activities that the community has to offer.  From programs such as backpacking in Yosemite national Park,to beach clean-ups, the Stevenson Outdoor Adventure House heightens the many ways to interact with nature.

  • Co-ed Floors are where men and women live in separate rooms, on the same hall and share a lounge and common bathroom. The bathroom facilities allow for ample privacy.
  • Single Sex Women’s Floors are also an option for those women who prefer them. Only women live in the rooms on these floors. Men are welcome as visitors; however, they cannot use the bathrooms on these floors.

Substance-Free House is another housing alternative provided at Stevenson College. The Substance-Free house is a residential option for students who do not want alcohol, other drugs, or smoking of any kind in their living environment.
