Sea Search Information for Students

What is Sea Search?
Sea Search consists of multiple activity sheets that focus on marine science topics and current research projects on display at UCSC’s Seymour Center at Long Marine Lab. Our educators collaborated with high school biology teachers to make each activity interactive and fun, while allowing you to practice your observation, critical thinking, and data analysis skills.

Currently there are two Sea Search activity series. Each time you complete all the activity sheets in a series, you earn a "Sea Search Certificate of Completion" from Long Marine Lab, UC Santa Cruz.

All high school students are encouraged to participate in Sea Search, whether it’s part of a class project assigned by your teacher, or simply because you have an interest in marine science and would like to learn more.

Click here to view the activity sheets in each Sea Search series.

Why was Sea Search created?
Sea Search was created to provide opportunities for you to experience marine science first hand at a working marine lab. Logistical challenges often prevent your teachers from organizing science-based field experiences for you during school hours, but Sea Search is a marine science program you can participate in when school is not in session.

What are the benefits of participating in Sea Search?

  • Have fun while learning about marine science through the Seymour Center’s exhibits, aquaria, touch tank, lab tours, and educational programs.
  • Learn what it’s like to be a scientist and how they do their jobs.
  • Practice observation, critical thinking, and data analysis skills.
  • Earn a "Sea Search Certificate of Completion" from Long Marine Lab, UC Santa Cruz, each time you complete an activity series.
  • Include participation in Sea Search on your college resume.
  • Learn about student volunteer opportunities at the Seymour Center at Long Marine Lab.

How does Sea Search work?

1) First, click here to view the activity sheets in each Sea Search series.

2) Decide which activity sheet(s) you want to complete on your visit to the Seymour Center. While we encourage students to work toward completing an entire series to earn a Certificate of Completion, it is not required. You can choose to do one or any combination of activity sheets.
Note: it is possible to complete an entire Sea Search series in one visit, however, it would be a very long day! Instead, you are encouraged to visit multiple times to complete a series.

3) Download and print your selected activity sheet(s) to take with you to the Seymour Center.

4) Visit the Seymour Center during our open hours to complete your activity sheet(s) using the exhibit hall and aquaria (extra copies of all activities are available at the Seymour Center Admissions Desk).

Seymour Center Hours
Tuesday – Saturday: 10 AM – 5 PM
Sunday: 12 – 5 PM
Monday: closed

5) Upon arrival at the Seymour Center, you should:

  • Sign in for Sea Search at the Admissions Desk. Admission fees will apply for each visit (student rate = $4 per person). Staff members will orient you to the center and give you a map of the exhibit hall.
  • Complete your activity sheet(s) to the best of your ability. Seymour Center docents (wearing navy blue polo shirts) will be available to help you if needed.

6) After completing your activity sheet, return to the Admissions Desk where staff members will check that your worksheet is complete. If so, they will stamp the front of your worksheet as verification. Show this stamp to your teacher if the activity was assigned for credit.

Progress Card 7) If you plan to complete an entire Sea Search series and earn a Certificate of Completion, tell the staff at the Admissions Desk and they will issue you a “Sea Search Progress Card” for your selected series.

Each time you complete an activity in the series, you will get a stamp on your Progress Card. You will be responsible for keeping your Progress Card and bringing it with you on all subsequent visits.

8) After you complete all activity sheets in the series, exchange your Progress Card for a Certificate of Completion. Show the certificate to your teacher if the series was assigned for credit.

Certificate

9) When you’ve completed one series, you are welcome to complete another. Currently, two Sea Search activity series are available.

10) You are encouraged to keep your Certificates of Completion and include participation in Sea Search on your college resume to demonstrate that you actively participated in an extracurricular marine science program.

How do I check my answers on each activity sheet?
Answer keys to each activity sheet will be available to you at the Admissions Desk. You may request an answer key after your activity sheet has been verified complete and stamped by Admissions staff.

Who do I contact if I have questions about Sea Search?
Call the Seymour Center at (831) 459-3800 and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the program.

Sea Search Information for Teachers

What is Sea Search?
Sea Search consists of multiple activity sheets that focus on marine science topics and current research projects on display at UCSC’s Seymour Center at Long Marine Lab. Seymour Center educators collaborated with high school biology teachers to align each activity with California Science Content Standards for grades 9-12.

The program is designed to be easy on teachers (requiring almost no prep time), and enriching, yet challenging for students. Each activity was created to be interactive and fun, while allowing your students to practice their observation, critical thinking, and data analysis skills.

Currently there are two Sea Search activity series. Each time a student completes all activity sheets in a series, they earn a “Sea Search Certificate of Completion” from Long Marine Lab, UC Santa Cruz.

All high school students are encouraged to participate in Sea Search, whether as part of a class assignment, or simply because they have a personal interest in marine science and are motivated to learn more on their own.

Click here to view the activity sheets in each Sea Search series.

Why was Sea Search created?
Learning about the ocean is a dynamic and engaging way to get students excited about science. With this in mind, Sea Search was created to provide opportunities for high school students to experience marine science first hand at a working marine lab.

Realizing that logistical and financial challenges make it difficult for many high school teachers to coordinate learning-based field experiences for their students, Sea Search provides teachers with an easy way to incorporate marine science into their curriculum, and is a program students can participate in on their own time and outside of school hours.

How do students benefit by participating in Sea Search?

  • Have fun while learning about marine science through the Seymour Center’s exhibits, aquaria, touch tank, lab tours, and educational programs.
  • Learn what it’s like to be a scientist and how they do their jobs.
  • Practice observation, critical thinking, and data analysis skills.
  • Earn a “Sea Search Certificate of Completion” from Long Marine Lab, UC Santa Cruz each time they complete an activity series.
  • Include participation in the Sea Search program on their college resume.
  • Learn about student volunteer opportunities at the Seymour Center at Long Marine Lab.

How does Sea Search work?

1) First, review the contents of each Sea Search series. Click here to view the activity sheets in each Sea Search series.

2) Decide if you would like to assign an entire Sea Search series, one activity sheet, or a combination of activity sheets. Choose how you would like to use the selected activities…

  • Class assignment?
  • Extra credit?
  • Independent study project for students who show an interest?
  • Tell students about Sea Search activity sheets and encourage them to participate on their own if they have an interest in marine science (i.e. no school credit awarded)
  • Other ideas?

3) Once you’ve chosen an activity for your students, there are three ways for students to access the worksheets:

4) Instruct your students to visit the Seymour Center during our open hours to complete their activity sheet(s) using the exhibit hall and aquaria. (copies of all activities are also available at the Seymour Center Admissions Desk).

Seymour Center Hours
Tuesday – Saturday: 10 AM – 5 PM
Sunday: 12 – 5 PM
Monday: closed

5) Upon arrival at the Seymour Center, students should:

  • Sign in for Sea Search at the Admissions Desk. Admission fees will apply for each visit (student rate = $4 per person). Staff members will orient students to the center and give them a map of the exhibit hall.
  • Complete their activity sheet(s) to the best of their ability. Seymour Center docents (wearing navy blue polo shirts) will be available to help students if needed.

6) After completing their activity sheet(s), students should return to the Admissions Desk. Staff members will check that the worksheet is complete, and if so, will stamp the front of the student’s worksheet as verification.

  • Staff members will not “grade” the student’s work, but will check that an honest effort was made by the student to answer the questions.

7) If one activity sheet has been assigned for credit, you should look for the Sea Search stamp in the upper left-hand corner of the activity sheet as verification that the student visited the Seymour Center to complete the work.

Activity sheet

8) If an entire Sea Search series has been assigned for credit, students have the opportunity to earn a “Sea Search Certificate of Completion.” There are two ways to earn a certificate:

Option 1

  • Students complete all activities within the series in one visit to the Seymour Center. This would be a long day for students and is not recommended.
  • Staff members will verify all activity sheets are complete at the end of the student’s visit, stamp the student’s activity sheets, and award the student a “Sea Search Certificate of Completion” for the series.

Option 2

  • Students complete the series in multiple visits (recommended).
  • On their first visit, students will receive a “Sea Search Progress Card” from the Admissions Desk. Each time an activity in the series is completed, students will get a stamp on their Progress Card.
  • Students will be responsible for keeping the Progress Card and bringing it with them on all subsequent visits.
  • After all activity sheets in the series are complete, the student will exchange the Progress Card for their Certificate of Completion, which can be shown to you as verification that the series was completed.
