Nest Cam - Redwood Shores

The Oracle camera is now closed for the 2007 season.

In 2001 and 2002 we provided a nest box and camera for a pair of peregrine falcons, known as Sadie and Jimbo, nesting at Oracle. After two successful seasons on camera, the falcons did not nest in the Oracle nest box during the 2003-2006 seasons.  In spring, 2005, an Oracle employee reported hearing peregrines while on a run along a levee path near Radio Road about two miles southeast of the Oracle campus. In 2006, birders reported that peregrine falcons were nesting on a tower overlooking the slough near the park. We confirmed that peregrines were using a raven nest near the top of the tower and that one young, approximately 35 days old, was present. Early spring 2007, a pair of peregrines were seen defending the raven nest and courtship activities were noted on the towers near the Radio Road dog park. They were also seen by Oracle employees at or near the nest box on Oracle campus building 400. Then, after a four year absence, they laid a four egg clutch this spring, and all four eggs have now hatched!

We have now confirmed Sadie's identity!  On May 23, 2007 Sadie's VID band was read by SCPBRG staff, and confirmed to read S over D.

Oracle Corporation has been a wonderful host to the falcons, and welcomed our advice and help to encourage a successful breeding attempt. Window washing is curtailed in the vicinity of the peregrines during nesting season, and UC Santa Cruz biologists are given access to the buildings for observations.
