California's Channel Islands

Channel Islands FoxWe were asked to assist a multi-agency effort to restore native wildlife and the balance of nature on the Channel Islands. Our part of the effort was to design a capture and relocation program for golden eagles that were preying upon the diminutive island fox.

Golden eagles colonized the islands in the 1980s and 90s, and began breeding there. The golden eagles were able to sustain themselves in part by eating the progeny of non-native pigs, and in part by capturing the diurnal foxes. The golden eagles were able to sustain themselves in part by eating the progeny of non-native pigs, and in part by capturing the diurnal foxes.

Channel Islands Feral PigOther agencies are working to eradicate the pigs, increase fox numbers, and restore bald eagles to the islands. The program we designed and initiated removed golden eagles as a temporary protection for the fox population.

Golden eagles are relocated to northeastern California. We have followed some of the re-located eagles using satellite transmitters and found that they survive and do not return to the Channel Islands.
