Nest Cam - San Jose

1/13/2010 UPDATE: A community supported camera upgrade, led by the San Jose Peregrine Falcon Alliance, has successfully purchased or secured donations of equipment needed to increase viewing opportunities of the San Jose Peregrine Falcons. Here at UC Santa Cruz, we are grateful to the many people and corporations who recognized the educational value of these birds at this site and supported these improvements with their contributions of money and equipment. We look forward to the season ahead! --Glenn R. Stewart SCPBRG Coordinator.

We hope to have it back up in early February--Please check back. In the meantime you can also watch the feed here.

For her third year, the female Peregrine Falcon “Clara,” nests on a south wall ledge of San Jose City Hall. Thanks to a partnership between UC Santa Cruz and the City of San Jose, we are able to watch the intimate details of life in a Peregrine Falcon nest as Clara and her mate, “Esteban,” raise a family.

The nest box shown here was installed by UC Santa Cruz biologists after Clara demonstrated a strong interest in San Jose City Hall as a prospective nest site in 2006. The “box” is a tray filled with aquarium gravel with a roof to simulate the kind of protected ledge that a falcon would choose in the wild. Young falcons have been raised and fledged in 2007 and 2008.

Please see the 2009 Nest Diary for updates on the progress of the breeding season and review the nest diaries for prior years for information about how the season has progressed in the past.
