Elf Owls

A Pair of Captive Bred Elf OwlsThe elf owl (Micrathene whitneyi) is a very small, nocturnal, desert-dwelling species classified as endangered by the State of California, largely due to habitat degradation on the Colorado River and agricultural conversion. SCPBRG undertook a small captive breeding program of elf owls, and released resulting progeny along the Colorado River. Unfortunately, expected agency habitat restoration activities were not fully undertaken, and the program ended with the release of the original owls back to the wild.
