Burrowing OwlConservation in California

Central Valley Nesting Area

Commensal with the California ground squirrel, resident in rangeland and agricultural areas.  An estimated 2,224 nesting pairs nest in this region (24% of California’s population); this population has declined 22-58% since the mid 1980s.

Conservation challenges include proactive habitat preservation and managing potentially conflicting agricultural practices and urban sprawl.
