California Burrowing Owl Consortium
Who We Are
The California Burrowing Owl Consortium is a group of approximately 60 biologists who are interested in and working to promote burrowing owl conservation in California.
Our Goal
To increase conservation of burrowing owls in California.
What We Have Done
The California Burrowing Owl Consortium has:
- Worked to promote burrowing owl conservation awareness in California since 1990.
- Prepared a colorbanding protocol for the State of California.
- Provided technical guidance to the State of California Department of Fish and Game.
- Evaluated alternatives to a petition to the State of California to list the burrowing owl as threatened.
- Met with California’s Secretary of Resources and Department of Fish and Game Director to discuss burrowing owl conservation policy and practices to avoid the necessity of listing.
Prepared a Burrowing Owl Survey Protocol and Mitigation Guidelines (Journal of Raptor Research Report 9:171-177) that was adopted by the California Department of Fish and Game (see Survey Protocol).
