Bald Eagles

Adult bald eagle (Photo © Franz Lanting)It is becoming increasingly clear that conservation of migratory birds, including raptors, must include consideration of both wintering and breeding areas, and also migratory stopover points. In cooperation with a variety of agencies, SCPBRG is using satellite transmitter technology to explore the life histories of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) that originate (fledge) in California, and those that visit the state as migrants during the winter.

Recently SCPBRG has also been coordinating the long-term California Midwinter Bald Eagle Survey. Participants from a variety of agencies and organizations yearly survey areas important to wintering bald eagles to assess long-term trends.
