Telemetry Maps for Adult Bald Eagles
Using satellite telemetry transmitters, we have studied the homeward migrations and movements of bald eagles that winter at California's reservoirs. Much to our surprise, virtually every eagle we have followed so far has traveled thousands of kilometers to a relatively small area of Canada's Northwest Territories, northern Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

"Daisy" - Millerton Adult Female
Spring 1998:
An adult female, who wintered at Millerton Lake in Central California, returns to her presumed breeding area on The Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada in spring of 1998. Read more about Daisy in 'Field Notes'.
Fall 1998: Adult female returns to winter at Central California's Millerton Lake after her spring migration to her presumed "home" and breeding territory on the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada. North-pointing arrows show her spring migration path.
Spring 1999: An adult female, who wintered at Millerton Lake in Central California, completes her northward migration, and arrives once again on an island on The Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Her timing and route are remarkably similar to spring 1998.
"Snafu" - Silverwood Adult Male
Spring 1998:
An adult male, who wintered at Silverwood Lake in Southern California, returns to his presumed breeding area on The Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada in spring of 1998.
Fall 1998: Adult male returns to winter at Southern California's Silverwood Lake after his spring migration to his presumed "home" and breeding territory on the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada. North-pointing arrows show his spring migration path.
Spring 1999:
An adult male that winters at Silverwood Lake in Southern California completes his northward spring migration to the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. Similar to last spring, we did not receive locations during a large portion of his migration.
Fall 1999:
An adult male that winters at Silverwood Lake in Southern California, begins his southward fall migration after his spring migration to his presumed "home" and breeding territory on the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada.
Spring 2000:
An adult male that winters at Silverwood Lake in Southern California begins his northward spring migration toward his summer area at the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories.
"Sam" - Millerton Near-Adult Male #1
Spring 2000:
A near adult male who wintered at Millerton Lake in Central California begins a northward migration to parts as yet unknown to us.
"Little Feet" - Millerton Adult Male #1
Spring 1998:
An adult male, who wintered Millerton Lake in Central California, returns to his presumed breeding area on Churchill Lake in Saskatchewan in spring of 1998.
Fall 1998: Adult male returns to winter at Central California's Millerton Lake after his spring migration to his presumed "home" and breeding territory on Churchill Lake in Saskatchewan. North-pointing arrows show his spring migration path.
Spring 1999:
An adult male tagged at Millerton Lake in January of 1998 completes his 1999 spring migration toward his presumed breeding area. His timing and path was very similar this year to that of spring 1998.
Fall 1999:
An adult male tagged at Millerton Lake in January of 1998 begins his 1999 fall migration from Churchill Lake in Saskatchewan. His timing and locations are remarkably similar to those of Fall 1998.
Spring 2000:
An adult male tagged at Millerton Lake in January of 1998 begins his 2000 spring migration toward his presumed breeding area.
"John Moore" - Millerton Adult Male #2
Spring 1999:
A second adult male who winters at Millerton Lake in Central California, and was fitted with a satellite transmitter in January of 1999, completes his spring migration northward. Unlike the other adults, he continues to move about a 13,400 square mile (34,600 sq km) area of the Northwest Territories and Alberta, indicating that he is a non-breeding "floater".
Fall 1999: A second adult male who winters at Millerton Lake in Central California, begins his southward migration from his summer area of Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories.
Spring 2000: A second adult male who winters at Millerton Lake in Central California, begins his northward migration toward his summer area of Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories.
Fall 2000: A second adult male who winters at Millerton Lake in Central California, begins his southward migration from Canada's Northwest Territories toward California.
Spring 2001:
An adult male who winters at Millerton Lake in Central California, begins his third Northward migration toward Canada's Northwest Territories.
"Alegria" - Millerton Adult Male #3
Spring 2000: A large adult male who wintered at Millerton Lake in Central California begins a northward migration to parts as yet unknown to us.
Fall 2000: A large adult male who wintered at Millerton Lake in Central California begins his southward migration from Canada's Great Slave Lake back toward California.
Spring 2001: A large adult male who winters at Millerton Lake in Central California begins his second northward migration toward Canada's Great Slave Lake.
Fall 2001: A large adult male who winters at Millerton Lake in Central California begins his southward migration from Canada's Great Slave Lake.
"Fran" - Millerton Adult Female #2
Spring 2002: An unusually large adult female eagle, tagged at Millerton Lake in California in January 2002.
