Our lines of ongoing inquiry:

Category formation in the natural and physical sciences:

  • How do new forms of technoscience, such as genomics, reconstruct notions of race, gender, and sexuality?

Democratizing Science:

  • How does science get done? Who is included? Who is excluded? Who should be included/excluded?
  • How can “the public” in of science institutions’ public engagement efforts be defined?

Re-Framing Bioethics:

  • What are the limitations of a bioethics formed around the principle of “individual autonomy”?
  • What other forms of bioethics might we imagine?

New forms of property:

  • What in practice can be owned? a gene?  genetic information?  an application of genetic information?  if an application, what counts as “an application”?
  • Who can be an owner?  What is the distinction between an owner and an inventor?
  • What new forms of property are emerging that might foster the goals of social justice?

The Meaning of Justice

  • How do scientific practices and innovations affect notions of justice and accountability?
  • Conversely, how do notions of justice and accountability shape how we conceive of and practice science?
