Centro Americanos Unidos is a group of students from diverse cultures
with a special interest in uniting the Central American community
at UC Santa Cruz. Centroamericanos forms a substancial part of Latino/a
students here at UC Santa Cruz. Yet, some of us graduate without ever
meeting each other. CAU hopes to serve as a space where Centroamericanos
can meet one another and build friendships. Our mission is to educate
ourselves and the larger UCSC community about the uniqueness and diversity
found within the Central American cultures. Our primary goal is to
build a strong and vibrant organization that meets the needs of this
community and encourages others to learn about our culture.
Chicanos and Latinos Educandose (ChALE) is a program committed to
increasing the retention and graduation rate for all raza here at
UCSC. ChALE can offer social support through its various events and
academic support through study hours and free tutoring.
Chicanos(as)/Latinos(as) in Health Education (C.H.E)
is an organization of Chicano and Latino students aspiring to
become health care professionals in order to meet the health
care needs of our community. Founded in 1972, C.H.E was established
at the University of California, Santa Cruz. We function as
a support group to help Chicano and Latino students reach the
goal of educating and serving our community.
CineMaiz
The mission of the Latin American Film Festival Committee is to bring quality films from Latin America and about Latin American issues to the campus community by organizing an annual film festival, CineMaíZ. The goal is to expose, educate, and challenge prevailing perceptions of Latin America as conveyed through the mainstream movie industry and popular culture in general.

HERMANOS BROTHERS
Mission: to create and augment the
Chicano/Latino community on theUCSC campus by providing a safe
space for Chicano/Latinos to come together,create friendships
and establish a network amongst the Chicano/Latino community
with fellow undergraduates, graduates, social
activists,professors, staff and friends. Our main focus is to
create a pipelineamongst Chicanos and Latinos on campus and to
facilitate a safe space or Chicano/Latinos to discuss the hard
issues and share experiences that affect our Raza, Cultura, y
Familia as well as ourselves. It is also a space in where
resources for graduate studies can be accessed.
La Revista
La Revista is an annual non-exclusive publication in
where the immediate an extended community members of UCSC can express
themselves through all forms of Literature and art. We believe in Free
Media, Free Space, and Media for ALL. These are the central pillars of
our philosophy, a philosophy that is based on the virtues of cultural
–pluralism and collectivity.
Las Girlfriends is
a Latina/Chicana/Mixed Heritage biannual publication produced by
students. This publication aims to provide Mujeres with a safe space
to contribute their experiences, voices, hearts and minds, through
poetry, artwork, photography, short stories and essays. Las Girlfriends
has existed at UCSC for six years as a result of the support and
participation from the Latina/Chicano/Mixed Heritage and UCSC community.
El Grupo Folklórico Los Mejicas was founded in 1972 by UCSC
students. They are a students run organization for Chicano/Latino
communities both on and off campus. The organizations purpose is
to promote cultural pride and awareness by learning and studying
traditional dances of Mexico. Los Mejicas is an extremely active
group at UCSC. They have participated in various events such as
the annual UCSC Multicultural festival, Chicano/Latino Graduation,
MEChA Parent Conference, and the annual Los Mejicas Spring Concert.
El grupo performs on campus, as well as the communities surrounding
UCSC.
The Latino Transfer Student Support Network is a new group at UCSC
sponsored in part by the Chicano/Latino Resource Center and the Educational
Opportunities Program. LTSSN was begun in response to the unique needs
of Latino Transfer students here at UCSC. This group is open for all
new and continuing Latino transfer students and provides a support
group/network/mentor program which will ease the transition from the
community college to the university experience. Our goal is to enable
the retention and success of UCSC's Latino transfer student population
by providing opportunities for networking, making connections, solidifying
support, and by fostering the development of mentorship and leadership
skills.
MOVIMIENTO ESTUDIANTIL CHICANA/O DE AZTLAN
The Chicano Movement of the late 1960's helped spark cultural and
historical pride in our people. Chicanas/Chicanos demanded to be treated
as equals and denounced acculturation and assimilation. Brown pride
began to express itself through poetry, literature, art and theatre.
The contributions of the Chicano Movement are numerous and continue
to be very valuable to our society. M. E.Ch.A was established at the
Denver Youth conference in 1969 by student organizations(such as UMAS
&MAYO) that came together to create one organization that would
work towards the self-determination of our gente.
MISSION STATEMENT:
Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (M.E.Ch.A.) is a student
organization that promotes higher education, cultura, and historia.
MEChA de UCSC is committed to the liberation of nuestra raza's minds,
bodies, and souls through educational, economic, and politcal empowerment.M.E.Ch.A.
was founded on the principles of self-determination for the liberation
of our people. We believe that political involvement and education
is the avenue for change in our society. In the time of the new sun,
los estudiantes of MEChA, los guerreros/as in other places, and la
gente all over the world are here to claim our voices and our rights
as humankind. Por la raza, habla el espiritu.
PHI OTA ALPHA INC.
With
roots spanning across three centuries, Phi Iota Alpha is a
national fraternity that sets itself apart from other
organizations through its history and commitment to individual
development, leadership, team work and cultural awareness.
Established December 26, 1931, ‘La Familia Fiota’ is the Oldest
Latino Fraternity in Existence. The distinguished brotherhood is
composed of undergraduate, graduate and professional individuals
dedicated to empowering the Latino community providing intense
social, cultural and professional programs and activities geared
towards the appreciation, promotion and preservation of the
Latin American Culture as well as the socio-economic and
academic advancement of Latinos and other minorities. Fuerza,
Integridad and Amistad, form the bonds and foundation of our
brotherhood that have endured many generations.
Queers of Color (QoC) is a student organization
that exists for the empowerment of people of color in the UCSC community
who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, two-spirit,
questioning, or non-labeling. We also welcome friends and allies!
QoC sponsors receptions, social events, speakers, open mics, and
other events throughout the year that focus on building community,
creating awareness, forming coalitions, and having fun!
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY SACNAS CHAPTER
To provide a forum for students from different science
and engineering majors or related majors for academic community
and social activities atUCSC.
The purpose of sanai shall be to promote and celebrate
American Indian culture and identity; establish and maintain
a strong sense of community among students, staff and faculty;
increase awareness; recruit and retain native students and increase
native student involvement.

We are brought together by heritage, social responsibility and desire
