Why a Roundtable: All too often the question of relations among African Americans and Latino/as emerges in immediate response to urgent crisis situations only to disappear, as a crisis becomes last week news. In contrast to that approach, we have organized a one day gathering beginning with a roundtable discussion among activists within and outside the academy who are directly involved in on-going Latino/a and African American collaborations.
Participants of this Roundtable will be able to take a grounded "real world" and long-range view of how such cooperation succeeds, the challenges which it faces, and strategies for a positive future for these two populations. The roundtable will take place from 2-4:30 PM and will be followed by a reception and the art exhibit titled "Black and Brown Visions,"curated by Mica Valdez, mexica queen.
Our main objective in organizing the roundtable is to provide a setting in which these diverse activists and
engaged scholars can share information about their experiences with transcommunal cooperation (what has worked, what has not, what can be done in the future to enhance such working together).
