Class of 2006

Michelle Peralta
Porter College

Michelle Graduated from UCSC in 2006 with a Business Management Economics degree. The San Francisco native just completed her first year working from Deloitte in Audit practice. She participates in the audit of financial statements as well as Sarbanes Oxley work. She is also involved in Lnet (Deloitte Latino Network) and ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting.)

Raquel Ochoa
College 8

Raquel graduated from UCSC in June 2006 with an Anthropology degree. She is currently living in Sonoma County and working as a substitute teacher. At the moment, she is applying to enter a multiple-subject teaching credential program at Sonoma State University for Spring 2008. After that, she plans on teaching for a while before going for her Master’s in the Education program.

Mari Schimmer

Mari graduated in 2004. Her majors were Politics and Women’s studies. She works for the Progressive Voter Network, recruiting and training volunteers in Colorado and New Mexico. Her job is to build networks of citizen activists in various communities so that people can hold their Senators and Representatives in Congress accountable on various issues. She works on issue campaigns throughout the year, and will be organizing a nationwide get out the vote campaign next November.

He graduated from UCSC in 2004 with an LALS degree.  He is currently pursuing his PPS credential and Masters in Counselor Education at SJSU. After working with at risk youth on the east side of San Jose, He began this fall working as a counselor at Campbell middle school.

Vanessa Enriquez Rios

Vanessa graduated from UCSC in 2004 with a BA in Chemistry and went on to get her PhD at UCLA for the same subject. She is currently as a Technical Service Rep at Prometheus Laboratories & Diagnostics, San Diego. She is exploring indirect science careers in industry while deciding her next major career move. “UCSC faculty and Staff genuinely cared about my well being and performance, and I encourage any student to seriously consider UCSC when selecting a university.”

Shela graduated from UCSC in 2003 as a Community Studies major. She received her J.D. from the University if New Mexico School of Law in 2007. She is currently job hunting but hopes to find a job that is in conjucting with her Indian law certificate. I would like to continue to work on and for indigenous peoples legal rights.

Ana graduated from UCSC in 2002 with a Studio Arts bachelors degree. This San Francisco native today works as the Marketing Director of  the Bay Area’s oldest community-based arts organization, Community music center, which is based in San Francisco’s Mission District.

Eva Padilla graduated from UCSC in winter of 2002. She majored in Sociology and went on to get her single subject teaching credential in Social Studies at Cal State Los Angeles. She currently lives in the city of El Monte were she grew up. She works for El Monte-Rosemead Adult school teaching ESL classes. “I believe my experiences at UCSC with collaboration with Barrios Unidos, Mi Familia Center and the Santa Cruz Juvenile Center helped me decide what career path to take and for that I am very grateful!”

Melanie Valdez

Melanie graduated from UCSC in 2002 with a major in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. She is currently finishing MSW program at SJSU and will graduate in May 2008. This Imperial Beach native is also interning for KidScope, is a research assistant for two professors, is a member of SWGSA (social work graduate student association), and is a member of the NASW (national association of social workers).
Since graduation for UCSC, Melanie has been employed by EMQ Children and Family services. Here she worked with families and children to get them into mental heath services as well as with the Addiction Prevention Services Department.

Luis Antonio Vargas

Luis Antonio was a Biology major that graduated in 2001. He went on to Georgetown school of Medicine, and then did his residency at Southwestern school of Medicine in Dallas TX. Today he has his MD and works as a family practice physician and is president of Fort Worth Skin Solutions LLC. “I wouldn't be enjoying life so much, if it weren't for my mentor - Dr. Frank Talamantes - He was a real teacher.”

Aldo R. Mercado
Aldo Mercado graduated from UCSC in 2000. His major was literature and went on to his J.D. from University of San Francisco School of Law. This Sacramento native today practices real state and is for his third year practicing law in San Diego.

While still in school, he works as a project assistant for a non-profit educational research company, Public Works, Inc. in Pasadena, CA.

Katiuska Castañeda

Katiuska graduated in 1999 with a major in Latin American and Latino Studies, and a minor in Politics. She currently works as a translator for the Special Education Department at the Los Angeles Unified school District. She translates documents known as the IEP´s (Individualized Education Program) for students in special education with all kinds of physical, emotional or learning disabilities. She does only do written translations at the LAUSD headquarter offices downtown L.A.

Nicole M. Guidotti-Hernández

Nicole graduated in 1997 with a Literature degree. She is now an Assistant Professor of Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona. She is also a faculty affiliate in Mexican American Studies, Latin American Studies and the Department of English. She received her doctorate degree from Cornell University in English, with a graduate minor in Latina/o Studies in 2004. She is working on a book manuscript titled Unspeakable Violence: Narratives of Citizenship Mourning and Loss in Chicana/o and U.S. Mexico National Imaginaries. The manuscript examines how Chicanas, Mexicanas and Indigenas in the U.S. Mexico Borderlands have attempted to exercise their citizenship and maintain a sense of bodily integrity and within the disciplinary structures of the two nation-states. With special attentiveness to racialized sexuality and gender, Unspeakable Violence examines episodes of violence against these communities as they are part of national historical amnesia. Her articles "Reading Violence, Making Chicana Subjectivities"appeared in Techno/futuros: Genealogies, Power, Desire (2007), edited by Nancy Raquel Mirabal and Agustin Lao-Montes, and "Dora the Explorer, Constructing'Latinidades' and the Politics of Global Citizenship" appeared in Latino Studies (Summer 2007). Currently she is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Center for Race, Politics and Culture at the University of Chicago. Beginning April of 2008, she will begin a William J. Fulbright Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Archivos Generales de la Nación and UNAM in Mexico City. Research and teaching interests: US/Third World Feminisms,Transnational Feminisms, Critical Race Studies, Chicana/o/Latina/o Studies, Borderlands History and American Studies.

Maria Ochoa

María Ochoa, PhD, is a writer, who teaches at San José State University in the department of social science and women's studies program. Recent work includes the anthology Shout Out: women of color respond to violence (co-edited with Dr. Barbara K. Ige (UCSC-Literature, 1997); the book and film Voices of Russell City: an oral history about a town and its people as well as the book Creative Collectives: Chicana artists working in community. Ochoa is also a poet, whose work was recently included in the anthology Oakland Out Loud. In 1999 the California State Assembly named her a "Woman of the Year" for her contributions to the visual arts. She lives in northern California with her hubby Mike Sweeney and three felines: Bombero, Rosie, and Baby.

Salvador graduated from UCSC in 1995 with his PhD in Organic Chemistry. He continued to get his NSF/JSPS (National Science Foundation/ Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Waseda University, Tokyo Japan. His current job consists of medicinal/organic chemistry research in early stages of drug discovery in biotech. “My company is involved in the Discovery of antiviral drugs to fight hepatitis C virus.”

Abel graduated in 1994 with an economics degree. He finished his graduate studies in 1998, and has been working as a teacher in Pajaro Valley for ten years now. He is also the Chapter president of the Association of Mexican American Educators in Watsonville.

This L.A. native is working as an Education Program Specialist at the U.S. Department of education. Here she oversees federal grants for the Office of Innovation and Improvement at the U.S. Dept. of ED.

Luis graduated from UCSC in 1990 with the major of Politics. He then went to graduate school to pursue a PhD in Political science, and held a variety of teaching, research, and administrative positions at UT Austin. Today, he is the Graduate Program Coordinator, Center for Mexican American Studies, University of Texas at Austin. “If I have any advice to offer Chicana/o and Latina/o students at UCSC is that they take full advantage of the education they can receive--both in and out of the classroom--which will prepare them well for anything they want to do in life.  Feel free to contact me if you are thinking about graduate school...especially at the University of Texas at Austin!”(Guevara)

Class of 1988

Eric Lopez

Eric attended Summer Bridge in 1988 and graduated from College Eight in 1992 with a B.A. in History.  He taught at the high school level for 10 years and is currently serving as Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction at Sierra Vista High School in Baldwin Park. He received my M.S. in education a few years ago and is now pondering on a Ph.D. program.

Thomas Sauceda

Thomas graduated from UCSC in 1987 with a double degree in Biology and Environmental Studies. He has been working at the arboretum on campus since he was a student and full time since 1987. He often travels to South America to collect seeds, plants and to network with botanical institutions. He also travels to New Zealand to collect plants as part of his job. He just recently went to New Zealand where he was able to collect and import close to 300 species and cultivars of native New Zealand plants. “If you have not heard of us, the Arboretum's collection of New Zealand plants is perhaps the best outside of New Zealand. Part of his job is giving tours of the garden so if you would ever like to have a tour I would be happy to show you or campus groups around. Bilingual tours as well” (Sauceda). He is currently taking night classes at UC Berkeley Extension in Landscape Architecture, where he hopes to eventually get a Landscape Architect's license.

Nancy Barrera

Nancy Barrera graduated in 1986 with a Biology degree. This Oakes alumni went on to get her masters in Public health and today works as an attorney for the state of California, Department of Public Health in Sacramento.

Maximiliano Cuevas

Maximiliano graduated from UCSC in 1977 and majored in Biology. He then received his MD in 1981 from UCSF. He is currently a physician board certified in obstetrics/gynecology and manages Clínica de Salud Del Valle de Salinas, a nine-clinic system of community health centers in Monterey County. His practice provides primary medical/dental care for 35,000 men, women, and children in the Salinas Valley; 80% of his patients are employed in agriculture.
 
Olga Najera-Ramirez

Olga graduated from UCSC with bachelors in History and Latin American Studies in 1977.  She went on to receive her MA in Latin American Studies and her PhD in Anthropology, both at UT Austin. She is currently a professor for Anthropology on campus.

Lydia graduated from UCSC in 1975 with a degree in Latin American studies. After graduation she continued on to get her MBA at Santa Clara University and today is a certified Public Accountant and does her own private practice in addition to teaching full-time in DeAnza college in Cuppertino. After completing her MBA, she worked for Price Water house Coopers, one of the big 4 CPA firms. Her career as a CPA has included working for Santa Clara County, consulting companies as well as a working for a pre-ipod company which was eventually bought out by Microsoft.

Fernando graduated in 1970 with a BA in Psychology. He went on to get his MA in Clinical Psychology from San Francisco State University and PhD on social-clinical Psychology from Wright Institute in Berkeley. Currently he works for Santa Barbara County. His work site is at the court house in Santa Maria, as "Justice Alliance Court Liaison.”  He also teaches at the local community college, Allan Hancock College.
