"SEX & CONSENT"
MANDATORY PRESENTATION MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENT

THIS MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENT IS REQUIRED IF YOU DID NOT ATTEND ONE OF THE SIXTEEN “SEX & CONSENT” PRESENTATIONS MANDATED FOR ALL NEW STUDENTS AT THE BEGINNING OF FALL QUARTER 2009.

The assignment is a 6-8 page, double spaced, paper based on the three readings cited below. Your paper should demonstrate a careful reading of the texts. Short quotations from the texts can be used to support your ideas, but just copying large sections from the texts is not acceptable.

PUT YOUR NAME, COLLEGE, AND STUDENT ID ON TOP OF YOUR PAPER.

The deadline is Friday, January 8, 2010. Email your paper as a Word document attachment to g_g@ucsc.edu, AND turn in a hard copy to Rape Prevention Education in Kresge room 153 (near the college office in Lower Kresge).

In a paper of 6-8 double spaced pages, consider and respond to the following topics and questions. There is no need to repeat the question, just number it in your paper and separate each question with a one-line space.

1.    Explain the meaning of the term “rape culture.” Use a variety of examples, including recent examples from your own experience or observation.

2.    Choose three of the most common myths about rape, and explain in your own words. What are the facts? How do these myths operate to support a rape culture?

3.    What is the main thesis in David Lisak’s article? What are the characteristics of males at high risk for committing rape on a college campus?

4.    In the recent rape of a 15-year-old girl by multiple boys outside of Richmond High School after a homecoming dance, about 20 other boys watched and did nothing, or joined in the gang rape. Why, in your opinion, did nobody intervene? What would you have done? Based on your reading of the Jackson Katz interview, how can males help prevent rape? Add some additional ideas of your own.

5.    After having read the articles and writing your paper, how has your thinking about the causes and prevention of rape been changed? What can be done on a personal level, as well as a broader social level, to help end rape?
