WELCOME TO RAPE PREVENTION EDUCATION

Who We Are
UCSC Rape Prevention Education was founded in 1979 to educate the community about the realities, the causes and the prevention of rape; to provide crisis counseling for rape survivors and their loved ones and to make rape an issue of public concern and discussion. Gillian Greensite (director), a team of dedicated peer educators and many volunteers comprise Rape Prevention Education.

Our Philosophy
Our perspective is that rape is socially, not biologically conditioned. Although most men do not rape, societies that encourage aggressive masculinity and objectification/exploitation of women as the norm, have alarmingly high rates of rape. Viewing rape as an individual problem does not address the underlying causes. Men and women need to come together to discuss and strategize the profound social, political and economic changes needed to create a rape free world.

What We Do
•    Education on all aspects of rape awareness and prevention, as well as relationship violence and stalking.

•    Rape crisis counseling for anyone (female, male, transgender) who has been raped, no matter how long ago.
Also for partners and friends. Advocacy, support, and referrals.

•    Self-defense classes and assertiveness-training workshops.

•    Campus-wide events such as “Denim Day,” the Fact Walk, and Clothesline Project.

•    Peer education program for interested students.

•    Monitoring of campus resources for safety.

•    Original posters, flyers, pamphlets, displays, buttons, books, and periodicals.
