FRIENDS OF THE CENTER

The Lionel Cantú Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans, Intersex Resource Center (aka The Cantú Queer Center) at UC Santa Cruz was formally opened in November of 1997 with a part-time director, a beautiful, unfurnished space, and a nominal budget.

Over the years, the Cantú Queer Center developed a comprehensive range of educational, informational, support and advocacy services--working to create a safe, inclusive environment for GLBTI students, staff, and faculty on campus and in the greater community. The Center is now home to several student organizations, an extensive circulating library, the GALA Art Gallery, and a host of engaging programs throughout the academic year.

Ten years later, the Cantú Queer Center has received numerous distinctions including from The Princeton Review and Planet Out.com which ranked UCSC in the top 10 of best colleges for GLBTI students nationwide. In 2006, the center was named in the Top 20 'Best of the Best' (out of nearly 700 universities surveyed) for GLBT students by the Advocate. Much of this growth and acclaim is thanks to the hard work and support from our circle of Friends.

While the Center's staff has grown modestly to include a Program Coordinator and student workers, the Center's budget has not kept pace with the expansion of incoming GLBTI students and the plethora of resource needs. The Center's ongoing success depends on support from our valuable contributors.
