Walk-in
Advising and Referrals: Drop-in support for students
with academic, social, and psychological needs is provided
by professionally trained Center staff. The Center is a
vital safety net for students at risk and a first stop in
the referral process.
GLBTI
Clearing House:: Enhanced the vital hub in broadcasting queer related events and news throughout the campus and community via a high quality weekly e-newsletter (Qconnect), an up-to-date web site, a Facebook account, extensive resource materials to college programming staff, a web calendar, and fliering of multiple events.
Student Study Center: Center maintained 5 computer workstations with appropriate software and web links for student research and writing needs. Wireless connection maintained. Student lounge and kitchen maintained.
Queer Student
Organization Support and Advising: In collaboration with SOAR, queer
student organizations receive assistance from
the Center in recruiting members, planning programs, publicizing
events, and developing leadership strengths.
Campus
Collaborations: The Lionel Cantú GLBTI Center
works in close collaboration with a range of groups including
the Ethnic Resource Centers; Women's Center; Center for
Tolerance, Justice and Community; Chicano/Latino Research
Center; Hate/Bias Board; Judicial Affairs Office; EOP; SOAR;
student government; the Graduate Student Association; Rape
Prevention Education; Hillel; HIV Prevention; all ten Colleges;
the Alumni Association, and many others. These active working
relationships create a web of support for GLBTI students
campus wide.
Community
Collaborations: Center staff does outreach to the off-campus GLBT community and works particularly closely with GLBT community organizations such as Triangle Speakers, the Diversity Center, the Queer Youth Awards, and Family Services committee.
GALA
Gallery: Student and community artists exhibit their
work in the Center's gallery. Receptions bring numerous
visitors to the Center.
Queer and Questioning People of Color (QQPOC) Workgroup: Collaborated to create more visibility and support for Queer Students of Color. Held monthly meetings, hosted 2 community receptions, and held large scale events with QPOC performing artists.
Staff and Faculty Services: Incoming queer staff and faculty frequently request the support of the Center in understanding their employee benefits, in assessing the safety of being 'out' and in networking. The Center sponsored two staff/faculty social gatherings during the year. Staff also provide faculty with considerable GLBT related resources and referrals throughout the academic year.
GLBT Conferences:The Lionel Cantú GLBTI Resource Center played a significant role in helping more than 100 UCSC students to attend the statewide GLBT College Conference in the Winter quarter. Students brought their conference learning's back to campus to share with the campus community.
Sexuality Studies Minor/Major Project: Along with faculty, the Center director worked as a member of the Sexuality Studies Working Group, which is working to establish a Sexuality Studies Minor and Major at UCSC. The Center publishes quarterly listings of Courses with Queer Content. The Center helped sponsor and organize two faculty events during the academic year.
Center
Library: A wide range of GLBTI books, videos/DVD's, magazines, and newspapers are available. Library holdings are now searchable from the Center's web site. Collection expanded to nearly 2,300 books (15%) and 225 DVD's. Circulation grew by 20%.
Center
Web site: The Center's web site continues to be a critical
source of information and referrals. The web site serves
as vital outreach to prospective and emerging GLBTI students.
It features a calendar, a student/staff OUTlist, and extensive
links to GLBTI sites.
Q-lists: Lionel Cantú GLBTI Resource Center maintains several e-mailing lists groups, which serve as communication and networking mechanisms. Lists include: Qundergrads, Qgrads, Qstaff, Qfaculty, and Qalums. Sign-Up

Community Facility Use: Extensive use of Lionel Cantú GLBTI Resource Center space by non-GLBT campus units, student organizations, class sections, residence halls, and community groups functions as a means of breaking down barriers across lines of sexual orientation, gender, age, and ethnicity
Academic
Internships/Community Service Learning: UCSC students receive academic credit for community or campus based projects. Center staff supervises matches, reviews course assignments, and write evaluations.
Volunteer
Program: Volunteers are actively recruited and donate ~18 hours/week to the Lionel Cantú GLBTI Resource Center and its projects.
Safe-Space
Program: Center promotes and distributes "Safe
Space Program" placards to staff and students to promote
a visibly affirming campus atmosphere for GLBTI students.
Placards also list center contact information and common
"coming out" tips.
Social/Educational
Major Programs: In addition to numerous small-scale programs, the center sponsored or cosponsored the following annual events/celebrations: OPERS Fall Festival, Questioning/Queer and New Program, National GLBT History Month, National Coming Out Day, African American History Month, National Day of Silence, Banana Slug Spring Fair, Lavender Reception (GLBT Alumni reunion), Queer Awareness Campaign (~30 individual events), Gender Awareness Day, AA/PI Heritage Month, Quarterly Town Halls, Queer Youth Awards, Annual Rainbow Ceremony (GLBT graduation celebration), and June Pride March and Rally.
Campus wide Training's and Lectures: Training's to college residential staff, health center staff, Counseling and Psychological Services staff, Family Student Services staff, and other units on GLBTI topics. Guest lectures in various courses by Lionel Cantú GLBTI Resource Center staff.
Rainbow
Graduation Ceremony: Annual graduation celebration honoring
GLBTI students and their families. Graduates are from area
high schools, from Cabrillo College and UCSC. Includes faculty,
staff, student, and alumni speakers, performers, and a banquet.
