UCSC Student Support Resources
Campus Ministry and University Religious Council —There
are a variety of non-university sponsored religious groups for students.
You may call 423-9400 for more information (or consult the Campus
Directory under "Campus Ministry and University Religions Council").
Coalition for Student Academic
Success (CSAS) — CSAS regularly provides academic
skills workshops open to all UCSC students. The workshops meet only
once and last around 90 minutes. The following are usually offered
once per quarter. Please call 459-4333 for information.
- Time and Stress Management—Offers strategies to
help you organize your time more efficiently.
- Effective Note-Taking Skills—Will help improve
your ability to take notes from lectures, textbooks, and in discussion
sections.
- Writing the Research Paper
- Test Anxiety—Helps you develop stress reduction
techniques that can improve your test preparation and test-taking
skills.
- Critical Reading—Designed to assist you in effective
and efficient reading for studying at the University.
- Study Techniques in the Natural Sciences—Reviews
study skills related to reading, scheduling, note-taking, and
graphs.
Career Planning and
Student Employment—The Student Career Center is located
in the third floor of the Bay Tree Building (across from the new
Bookstore). The Career Center provides advising about careers and
graduate schools. Additionally, the Career Center is where you can
find listings for student jobs and internships. Look
over their website!
The Community Rentals
Office (CRO)— helps students locate rental housing
and serves as a resource center. CRO maintains a computerized, up-to-date
listing service for rentals.
Regular Business Hours: 9:00am - 4:00pm -- Monday - Friday, open
during the lunch hour. The Office will be closed on the following
dates: September 2, November 28 and 29, December 24 through January
1, 2003.
Computer Labs —There are student computer labs located
throughout the campus. The ones most convenient for Porter College
students are as follows:
Porter Computer Lab: located in Porter Study
Center and houses a number of Macintosh computers, a scanner,
a free printer, and color printer for Porter students only.
Porter Arts Computer Lab: in room D-240 and the Arts Visualization
and Animation Lab in room D-245, offers Macintosh computers, a
wide variety of software programs, printers, and other peripherals
for students' use for word processing, artwork, and other applications.
Student ID required and some preference is given to students enrolled
in computer arts classes. These labs are administered by Information Technology Services (ITS), 459-3884. ITS help desk is 459-4357.
Disability Resource Center (DRC)—The Disabilities
Resource Center (DRC) can help if either you already know that you
have a learning disability or you think you may have a learning
disability. (Many students do not discover they have a disability
until they get to college.) Students who register with the DRC can
arrange to get extra help in their classes. DRC is located at 146
Hahn Student Services (phone: 459-2089).
Education Abroad Program
(EAP)—Porter College wholeheartedly recommends that
many of you consider studying abroad for one or more quarters during
your junior year. EAP is part of the Office of International Education
located at 205 Classroom Unit
(phone: 459-2258). You can also look them up at this website.
Ethnic Resource Centers—The following organizations
are located on the third floor of the Bay Tree Bookstore building.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Resource Center—This
resource center is located at Merrill College (but open to non-Merrill
students) and may be reached at 459-2468 or glbtcenter@ucsc.edu.
Hate Crime or Bias Incident—If you have been targeted
in a bias- or hate-related incident while on campus or while participating
in a University-sponsored activity, please bring the incident to
the attention of the Director of Student Judicial Affairs (459-4447).
The Director of Student Judicial Affairs will be able to inform
you of your options and offer advice or referrals.
Learning Center
/ Educational Opportunities Program (EOP)— The Learning
Center can help direct you to a variety of academic support and
tutoring resources across the campus. The EOP Learning Center has
an annex at Crown College (phone: 459-5854). Visit their website
for an amazing array of help that is freely available to you!
Lost and Found— See "Police" below. If you
lost an item at Porter, please go to the Porter College Office,
D-104
Police—Call 911 in case of an emergency. For non-emergency
queries, the Campus Police can be reached at 459-2231. The Campus
Police also handle Lost and Found.
Psychological Support—Making the transition to college
poses many challenges including moving away from family and friends,
making new friends, dealing with roommates, learning manage one's
time, and handling a demanding academic load. Depression and anxiety
are common. If you feel stress, sad, nervous, or upset, please take
advantage of the support resources on campus. You have access to
psychological counseling either at of the following:
1. Student Health Services: Room 105 Cowell Student Health Center
or call 459-2628. (If you want to see a counselor quickly at Student
Health Services, tell them it is an emergency even if you do not
think it is an emergency. Otherwise, you may have to wait weeks
for an appointment.)
2. Porter College has two professionals available on location
in the college to help you by appointment:
- Porter College Doctoral Fellow, Penny Asay, Ph.D. 459-2572
- Porter College Doctoral Fellow, Susan Gulbe Walsh, Ph.D 459-2377.
Sexual Harassment Officer—If you have experienced
unwanted sexual attention or abuse from a student, staff member
or faculty, please contact the Sexual Harassment Officer at 459-2462.
You will have the option of making a formal complaint. Your name
will be kept confidential.
Special Internship Programs: Service Learning and Field
Study—You can receive course credit for working in a local
business, government, educational, or social service agency. Course
credit programs are offered through College Nine (contact Abbey
Asher at aasher@cats.ucsc.edu) as well as through some departments
such as Community Studies (for majors and non-majors), Psychology
(for majors only), Economics (for majors only), Environmental Studies
(for majors only), and Sociology (for majors only).
Student Government
Student Union Assembly (SUA)—The offices for the
campus student union are located at the Student Center. You may
reach them at 459-4838 or suachair@ucsc.edu.
Student Organization Advising and Resources (SOAR)—This
organization works under Student Affairs on campus to promote
student organizations and student involvement.
SOAR offices are located at the Student Center. You may reach

Student Media—This includes student publications
and the campus radio station. You may reach them at 459-2840.
Student Health

UC-DC Program—Students
take classes and complete an internship Spend Fall, Winter or Spring
quarter studying and interning in Washington, D.C. Undergraduate
juniors and seniors in all majors can now enroll full-time in the
UCDC Program. Sophomores with special circumstances regarding their
academic schedules, particularly those in the natural sciences or
engineering, may apply as well. Students take classes and intern
at one of the many organizations of agencies in the Washington D.C.
area while fully enrolled as UCSC students. The cost for the quarter
is comparable to a quarter on campus at UCSC (plus travel), and
need-based scholarships are available to aid in the cost of airfare
and additional living expenses. Students are housed in the UC Washington
Center. Application materials are widely available throughout the
campus during the months of October and March. Further information
