Why Dogs Are Prohibited On Campus

Samantha the Goat (The Sad Story)

Samantha the Goat
Killed By A Dog
March 22, 1978

Once upon a time (1978 to be exact), there were two best friends who lived happily on a hillside at UCSC. Sam the horse, a member of the UCSC Police Department, and his pal Samantha the goat, were an inseparable pair who were apart only when Sam was taken out for patrol duty.

These unusual buddies were a popular sight in their pasture near the main entrance, until one fateful day when a woman brought her large Shepherd/Lab mix dog to campus for a run. While running loose, the dog cornered Samantha, trapped her inside a fence, attacked and killed her. The dog's owner insisted her dog was not aggressive and "would never hurt a flea."

Ironically, the University had already planned to implement a "no dogs on campus" policy because of the number of loose, uncontrolled or abandoned pets on campus. Samantha's death was an unfortunate final straw in that process.

Samantha's grave still stands on the hillside where she was killed. You can see it on your left side as you come up Coolidge Drive from the main entrance.
