Employment Opportunities Kiosk Guard UNIT: Police Department Under general supervision, a Kiosk Guard greets visitors to the campus at night. With a strong emphasis on public service, guards determine who may enter the campus, provide information to visitors and guests, and assist Police Officers in the safety and security of the campus. Kiosk Guards must have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with visitors, students and staff. DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES: 95% Screen Visitors Question vehicle occupants, bicyclists, and pedestrians to determine reasons for seeking entry to campus, verifying reasons given by visitors for seeking entry to campus. Allow only authorized persons to enter and deny access to persons with no legitimate business on campus. Determine campus affiliation by recognizing valid parking permits. Answer questions and give directions to locations on and off campus. 1% Provide Assistance to Police Officers Monitor police scanner and be alert for situations which may involve campus personnel or campus affiliates. Take appropriate actions when informed of an emergency or situation requiring immediate action. Report incidents of suspected driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or other violations of law or suspicious activity to police officers. Issue oral warnings to drivers and bicyclists for minor equipment violations. Direct traffic, administer first aid or CPR, and assist with emergency traffic control. 2% General Duties Drive campus roads and parking lots to answer questions, maintain security, and provide a uniformed presence for crime prevention. Operate a two-way radio communicating with Dispatch, department personnel, and other campus units. Maintain the security of confidential information obtained through the department. Follow oral and written instructions correctly. Testify in court when subpoenaed. Complete assignments on time. Maintain university equipment in clean and workable order. Keep work area (including desk, locker and mail box) neat and clean. 1% Special Events Post barricades and temporary signs. Direct traffic; provide information and related services to ensure the safe flow of traffic and pedestrians. Assist with booking and detention of arrestees, photographing, and evidence collection. Monitor crowds and movement of people and report activity to police officers. 1% Administrative Tasks Complete overtime logs and time and attendance records. Maintain logs of authorized guests and of vehicles denied entry or redirected. Write memos and reports regarding incidents or safety hazards. Independently develop proposals for streamlining kiosk processes wherever possible to conserve staff time and monetary expense, and to improve service within and outside the department. Attend meetings and successfully complete assigned training. QUALIFICATIONS: The ability to respond to anger and hostility using good communication skills, professionalism, tact, and diplomacy to diffuse hostile situations. The ability to work independently, exercising initiative and following through on assignments with minimal direction. The ability to learn and stay knowledgeable of pertinent policies, regulations and procedures, applying them with consistency. The ability to recall names, faces, descriptions, vehicles, and related details. The ability to independently evaluate each situation and exercise sound judgment to decide which action is warranted. Ability to use a personal computer for email and report entry. The ability to complete work with attention to detail and accuracy and write clear, legible and grammatically correct documents and memos. The ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and legally. The ability to stand and walk on uneven surfaces for long periods of time and to work out of doors in all types of weather. The ability to learn and effectively use first aid, CPR and traffic control skills. The ability to be trained to proficiently use a police radio, OC pepper spray, road flares, traffic cones, barricades and fire extinguisher. SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must successfully pass a thorough background investigation of work and personal history, including fingerprint check, criminal history, credit check, and driving record. The incumbent will be required to purchase and wear a University approved uniform. Uniform replacement allowance provided at the completion of one year. Must be licensed to drive in the State of California. The incumbent must be willing and able to work nights, holidays, weekends, and overtime assignments.
