Rescue Class

This course has two components:

  1. training divers in the knowledge and skills needed to manage risks and effectively handle limited in-water problems and diving emergencies
  2. training divers to assist in the training of new Scuba divers under the direction of an Instructor.

Skills included in the training are: assists, transports, surface rescues and rescues from depth involving both boat and shore-based skin and scuba divers, problem recognition, and escorting of divers above and below the water. This course meets the prerequisite rescue training for Divemaster, Assistant Instructor and Instructor. You will receive the following certifications: NAUI Rescue Diver, NAUI Training Assistant, and DAN Oxygen Administration. The course consists of 6 lectures, 4 pool sessions, 2 skin dives, and 5 scuba dives. This course is offered Fall, Winter and Spring quarters and enrollment is limited to 10. Check the current Scuba Calendar for the time and location of the first meeting.

PREREQUISITES for the course are: Must be a certified scuba diver from a nationally recognized agency, have at least 10 logged Scuba dives, have medical clearance from the UCSC Health Center. Please bring a copy of all of these to the first lecture if you did not take the Basic or Advanced SCUBA courses at UCSC. You must possess your own skin diving equipment: mask, snorkel, fins, booties, gloves, web weight belt, 2 weight belt keepers, cutting device, and exposure suit.

REQUIREMENTS for course completion: Students must attend all lectures, pool sessions, skin dives, and scuba dives. You must pass a written exam and an ocean skills test. You must obtain First Aid and CPR certifications by the end of the quarter. The course fee is $100 and a $65 material fee which includes the lecture notes, CPR mask shield, and certification packages.
