Basic Class

This course is geared toward the successful completion of a NAUI Basic Scuba Diver Certification.

It is divided into three parts:

  1. Lectures (Tuesdays 7-9:30pm, see Calendar for room)
  2. Pool labs (either Wednesdays or Thursdays - check the Calendar for times - at the 50 meter pool)
  3. Beach Diving (4 weekend days, see the Calendar for dates) which consists of two skin dives and four shore based scuba dives.

The course is challenging and does consume a lot of time, but the effort is well worth it - divers from this program have gone onto both Scientific and Recreational diving careers, diving all over the world! This class is offered Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters and enrollment is limited to 20 (10 each pool session). Depending on what day the Quarter starts, the first class session will either meet for the lecture (Tuesday) or for the pool session(s) (Wednesday or Thursday) - check the Schedule of Classes to make sure you show-up for the first class session. If the first class is at the pool bring your swim suit and be prepared to take the swim test.

PREREQUISITES for the class are: All students need to pass a swim test (25 yards underwater on one breath, 350 yards surface swim in under 9 minutes, tread water for 10 minutes and recover a lead weight from 8 feet of water). PERMISSION CODES WILL BE GIVEN TO THOSE WHO PASS THE SWIM TEST. You must also obtain medical clearance from the UCSC Health Center by the fourth week of class. Students will need to purchase the following equipment: mask, snorkel, fins, gloves, booties, web weight belt, 2 weight belt keepers, and cutting device.

CLASS LOTTERY: During some quarters we have more students wanting to enroll in Scuba than we can accomodate. As mentioned above we can only accept 10 students per Pool Lab session and so we use a lottery system when we exceed our limit of 10. To be eligible for the lottery you must pass the swim test. If you do not get into the class through the lottery system, we will give you priority to get into the class for the very next quarter. This way everyone that wants to take Scuba during their tenure at UCSC will be able to do so. If you have questions about how this all works, please contact the Scuba Office (831-459-4518).

REQUIREMENTS for course completion: Students must pass a written exam, pool skills test and ocean skills test. Attendance at both Skin dives and all 4 Scuba dives is mandatory. Current CPR/First Aid certification is required but is not offered as part of the class. The course fee is $75 and there is a $55 material fee which includes the text book and certification package.
