Advanced Class

This class is offered to facilitate the development of the Scuba diver's open water techniques through the completion of 6 supervised training dives. Emphasis is placed on dive planning, buoyancy control and navigation skills. Dive locations will be varied (weather permitting) with most dive sites being in the Monterey/Carmel area with the dives being conducted over three weekend days. Dives will include one local boat dive and one night dive. This is a great way to meet other divers here at UCSC, learn about the local dive spots and be introduced to the local diving community.

This class is offered Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters and enrollment is limited to 15 students. Check the current Scuba Calendar for the first class meeting - It is usually on the first Friday of the quarter in OPERS Conference room, 5PM. You must sgn -up at the OPERS counter, 2nd floor, before that first class meeting to ensure a spot in the class. Please bring your student ID card with the curent quarter sitcker.

PREREQUISITES for the course are: Scuba certification by a nationally recognized agency, medical clearance by the UCSC Health Center and a pool skills evaluation using both Skin and Scuba gear. Students will at least need to provide the following equipment: mask, snorkel, fins, booties, gloves, web weight belt, cutting device, exposure suit, underwater light and chemical light. The University will provide Scuba cylinders, BCs, regulators, 3 gauge consoles and lead weights for your weight belt. It is STRONGLY recommended that you have either private medical insurance that covers diving injuries and medical evacuation or purchase a DAN membership with diving insurance.

REQUIREMENTS for course completion: Students will need to complete all 6 of the ocean dives as well as assist with 2 of the Basic class pool sessions (see Calendar for pool times). The course fee is $95 and if you desire a NAUI Advance Certification card there is an additional $20 fee.
