Summer Junior Basic Sailing Class
(Ages 10-16)
Basic Sailing is
a coeducational, introductory hands-on course using Coronado 15's. Students need
no prior boating experience. Good attendance is strongly recommended in order
to achieve best results. Satisfactory completion meets prerequisite for intermediate-level
dinghy (small boat) sailing classes.

Students master
the basics inside the protected Santa Cruz Harbor, then venture out into the
beautiful Monterey Bay for further practice if conditions allow.
Topics to be covered include:

Rigging:
- launching the
boat, lowering centerboard, inserting rudder
- proper raising
of mainsail
- basic knot tying
- rigging for
strong vs. light winds
Basic Sailing Fundamentals
- departing from
the dock with control (shoving off)
- balancing the
boat with proper skipper and crew body positions
- sail adjustment
(sail trim)
- tacking and
jibing techniques
- tiller extension
and main sheet hand change
- returning to
the dock with a controlled landing
Boating Safety
Fundamentals
- safety procedures
around dock area and harbor channel
- safe operation
of the boats including self-rescue techniques
- rules of the
road and ocean conditions
Pre-requisite:
No prior sailing experience necessary. Intermediate level swimming ability.
