Advanced/Competitive Rowing Class

This course is offered in Fall and Spring Quarter.

Advanced Rowing is geared towards the Int. student who wants to move into an Open Ocean Rowing Competition level and join our Rowing Team.

RowingTeam2009

Enroll online, or show up at the first class meeting at the entrance to the East Field House on Campus (not at the harbor). Pre-enrolled students must be at the first class meeting in order to retain their spot. Students have priority over the public during Fall, Winter and Spring, however non-students who hold a current OPERS wellness card may enroll in classes that are not full at the first meeting on campus. Winter quarter is the best bet for non-students during the academic year as enrollments are usually lower.

Prerequisite: Int. Rowing or equivalent.

What will be covered:

Review:

  • Boat rigging/de-rigging, vocabulary, docking.

  • The stroke and steering.

  • Safety in and out of the harbor.

Rowing technique and skills:

  • Capsize recovery.

  • Rowing drills to improve stroke.

  • Rowing for excercise.

  • Rowing on the Bay with destinations, courses.

  • Racing skills: rounding buoys, and starts.

Upcoming Events:

May 15, 2010 - 2nd Annual Slug Row. A short course about 3 nm open to all boats. A medium course about 6 nm for open water boats only. A long course about 10 nm for open water boats only. Come support the UCSC Slug Rowing Team at our biggest fundraiser of the year! More info coming closer to the event!

Past Events:

October 4, 2009 - We participated in the Lobster Row hosted by the Santa Cruz Rowing Club out of the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor. Congrats to Andrew Wighton for taking 1st in his class for the second year in a row!

May 30, 2009 - The first annual UCSC Slug Open Water Rowing Regatta went fantastic! Thanks to our many volunteers, donations for food from Chili's Restaurant on 41st Ave., donations for our official regatta t-shirts from the Crows Nest Restaurant and Dan McFadden, and all the rowers who came out and rowed hard!
