SLUG SAILING
|
The course combines "hands on" rigging and docking practice in the harbor and sailing practice out on the Monterey Bay with instruction in sail trimming, de-powering, powering-up, person overboard recovery techniques, boating safety, weather, ocean conditions, sailing theory, rigging, navigation, proper VHF usage, and the maritime rules of the road. Students practice in one of our Santa Cruz 27' sloops. The SC 27 is a locally built ultralight displacement keelboat known for its sporty performance as well as its surprising user-friendliness. The class is limited to 16. Students usually sail the boats in groups of 3-4 per boat. Enroll for sailing classes during Fall, Winter and Spring quarters online, or show up at the first class meeting at the entrance to the East Field House on campus (not at the harbor). Pre-enrolled students must be at the first class meeting in order to retain their spot. Students have priority over the public during Fall, Winter and Spring; however, non-students who hold a current OPERS recreation card may enroll in classes that are not full at the first meeting on campus. Winter quarter is the best bet for non-students during the academic year as enrollments are usually lower. Prerequisite: Intermediate Dinghy. Swimming ability is required. Instructor: Rusty Kingon Class Fee: $50.00 For more information call (831) 425-1164, or email us:
