SLUG SAILING
|
After the review phase, the emphasis of the Intermediate Dinghy class shifts towards further development and refinement of small boat sailing techniques including: -A much greater emphasis on upwind and downwind sailing ("windward/leeward"). -Sailing in more wind: More time is spent outside of the harbor learning to handle stronger conditions. -Physical techniques: In stronger wind, more powerful physical techniques are necessary in order to achieve the best performance from the boats. These include: more advanced levels of body position ("hiking out"), more efficient control of sail adjustment ("trimming"), and a greater command of the steering of the boat. -Theory: Sail trim, angle of heel, points of sail, depowering vs. powering up, micrometeorology, and the relevant fundamentals of aero and aqua-dynamics and how they relate to sailboat performance and handling. Enroll for sailing classes during Fall, Winter and Spring quarters online, or show up at the first class meeting at the entrance to the East Field House on campus (not at the harbor). Pre-enrolled students must be at the first class meeting in order to retain their spot. Students have priority over the public during Fall, Winter and Spring; however, non-students who hold a current OPERS recreation card may enroll in classes that are not full at the first meeting on campus. Winter quarter is the best bet for non-students during the academic year as enrollments are usually lower. Prerequisite: Basic Dinghy. Swimming ability is required. Instructors: Rusty Kingon, Gabe Kilburn. Class Fee: $45.00
