Advanced Dinghy Sailing Class

This Course is only taught in the Spring!

The Advanced Dinghy sailing course is a co-ed, hands-on course taught in six Coronado 15' boats with a limit of 12 students. Good attendance is strongly advised in order to achieve the best results. The course begins with a review of the rigging, sailing techniques, and boating safety skills that were covered in the UCSC Basic and Intermediate sailing classes.

DinghyClass03_08

The course continues with a focus on optimizing performance and control of the Coronado 15 dinghy including:
  • Sailing in stronger conditions
  • Upwind sailing techniques
  • Downwind sailing techniques
  • Steering through swells
  • Establishing and maintaining a plane
  • Trapezing techniques
  • Racing techniques and rules

Enroll for sailing classes during Fall, Winter and Spring quarters online, or show up at the first class meeting at the entrance to the East Field House on Campus (not at the harbor). Pre-enrolled students must be at the first class meeting in order to retain their spot. Students have priority over the public during Fall, Winter and Spring; however, non-students who hold a current OPERS recreation card may enroll in classes that are not full at the first meeting on campus. Winter quarter is the best bet for non-students during the academic year as enrollments are usually lower.

Prerequisite: Intermediate Dinghy. Swimming ability is required.

Instructor: Rusty Kingon.

Class Fee: $45.00
