Beginning Rowing The Beginning Rowing class is a co-ed, hands on six week course that meets two times a week. It is started out being taught in 4-person rowing shells, three rowers and one coxswain. Basic skills and technique are learned on the dock and within the Santa Cruz harbor. These lessons consist of boating safety, weather, ocean conditions, types of rowing boats, nomenclature, fundamental skills, specific safety and rescue aspects related to the activity, and entering and exiting the harbor safely. Having mastered the basics, students venture out into the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary under the guidance of the UCSC rowing instructors. It is not uncommon for students in the UCSC rowing classes to see sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises and much more. Near the end of the class the students begin testing out their skills in 2-person(doubles) and 1-person(single) boats. After completing this course successfully the students will be certified as Level 1 Rowers and allowed to join the Rowing Club. Prerequisite: No prior rowing experience needed. Intermediate-level swimming ability. Instructors: Rusty Kingon, Gabe Kilburn. Class Fee: $40 For more information call (831) 425-1164, or email us: |
