Nonverbal Communication

Consider this list of nonverbal messages and reflect on how you may be communicating more than you know, without words:

  • Gestures, body movements
  • Facial movements, expression / lack of expression
  • Eye contact / eye avoidance
  • Artifacts: Clothing, hair style, jewelry, other adornments, home or office décor
  • Use of space: how close/how far away we stand when talking with others
  • Territoriality: reactions to real or perceived encroachment on our personal space
  • Touch: frequent / infrequent, light / strong, comfortable with / not comfortable with
  • Nonverbal vocalization: pitch, tone, rate, volume; pauses and hesitations
