Nonverbal Communication
Consider this list of nonverbal messages and reflect on how you may be communicating more than you know, without words:
- Gestures, body movements
- Facial movements, expression / lack of expression
- Eye contact / eye avoidance
- Artifacts: Clothing, hair style, jewelry, other adornments, home or office décor
- Use of space: how close/how far away we stand when talking with others
- Territoriality: reactions to real or perceived encroachment on our personal space
- Touch: frequent / infrequent, light / strong, comfortable with / not comfortable with
- Nonverbal vocalization: pitch, tone, rate, volume; pauses and hesitations
