In 1968 a private donation from Charles E. Merrill (of Merrill-Lynch fame) founded the college. Merrill College seeks to promote respect for the cultural heritage of each student, and of all world cultures. Merrill is home to 600 residential students and another 900 affiliated students who live off campus. The Merrill Core Course "Cultural Identities and Global Consciousness" delves into issues of cultural identity, world poverty, nationalism, imperialism, economic development, and contemporary women's roles in different cultures.
