The Program:
Recognizing the increasingly rigorous requirements for science majors, Merrill College, along with several other colleges, has developed an innovative program to support students who are interested in pursuing a major in the sciences. Research has shown that forming study groups in the sciences promotes collaborative learning and group problem solving, which are key to student success. Students enrolled in the SLC can immediately form a supportive community because they are living in close proximity and share common goals. To facilitate group learning, students participating in the program are placed in a special Chemistry 1A section, together with a Teaching Assistant who is committed to supporting the SLC. These students also enroll in a math course--either Math 2 (College Algebra for Calculus) or Math 3 (Precalculus), along with their college core course.
This program is designed for students who have a strong interest in science but feel slightly underprepared for university-level course work. SLC requires a commitment to success, a desire to pursue sciences, a willingness to work hard, and a positive attitude. You must be a Merrill first-year student to participate in the Merrill SLC.

Applications will be mailed to eligible entering frosh who have identified themselves as science majors and whose placement exam scores qualify them for this program.
