What is MSI?Modified Supplemental Instruction (MSI) provides peer-guided interactive group learning sessions which are attached to select lower and upper division undergraduate courses. LSS attaches MSI to approximately 45 courses which have proven to be challenging for many UCSC students. Statistical data indicates that students who attend MSI pass the courses at a higher rate than students who do not attend MSI.
How MSI WorksMSI sessions are offered each week. Unless otherwise noted, you may attend any MSI session at any time during the quarter without making a weekly commitment. However, students who attend MSI sessions regularly gain more academic knowledge than students who attend occasionally. MSI sessions are available on a first come first serve basis. Please see the professor or the MSI Learning Assistant in your class for more information.
What is tutoring?
Content-related tutoring is most courses not supported with MSI. Additionally, writing tutoring is available in writing
courses as well as for writing assignments in courses throughout the disciplines. Tutoring is available to all students.
What is Drop-in Writing or Math?
Drop-in tutoring is available for math and writing, although each program functions slightly differently from one another. Drop-in services are available during finals week.
Drop-in math tutoring is available for students seeking assistance in Math 2, 3, 11A, 11B, 19A, 19B, 22, 23A and 23B. Typically, the schedule is Tue-Thur. 4-8pm. During drop-in math, the tutor will circulate the room, helping students with individual homework problems. Students who are interested in using this service will need to put their name on a cue and wait their turn with the tutor. Students are encouraged to work together on math problems while waiting.
Drop-in writing tutoring is available for any class except College Core. Typically, drop-in is held Monday-Thursday from 3:00pm-6:00pm. Drop-in writing is essentially 30 minute express appointments. Although students can just show up to drop-in tutoring, they also have the option of calling LSS ahead of time to reserve an appointment.
