Learning Support Services at UCSC offers the following programs to help students excel academically:

• Modified Supplemental Instruction (MSI)
• Tutoring

Learning Support Services also functions as a referral service and directs students to appropriate learning assistance at UCSC, including study strategies workshops, department sponsored tutoring, and organized study groups.

What is MSI?

Modified Supplemental Instruction (MSI) provides peer guided interactive group learning sessions which are attached to select lower and upper division undergraduate courses. LSS attaches MSI to approximately 45 courses which have proven to be challenging for many UCSC students. Statistical data indicates that students who attend MSI pass the courses at a higher rate than students who do not attend MSI.

How MSI Works

MSI sessions are offered each week. You may attend any MSI session at any time during the quarter without making a weekly commitment. However, students who attend MSI sessions regularly gain more academic knowledge than students who attend occasionally. MSI sessions are available on a first come first serve basis. Please see the professor or the MSI Learning Assistant in your class for more information.

What about tutoring?

Content related tutoring is available in all subject areas. Additionally, writing tutoring is available in writing courses as well as for writing assignments in courses throughout the disciplines. Tutoring is available to all students.

UCSC students have access to our on-line tutor sign-up system each quarter, where tutors post academic biographies and schedules.
