Your Housing Contract...
Your housing contract is a legally binding contract for the entire duration of the academic year, excluding Winter break. You may cancel your contract only if the cancellation criteria in the Terms and Conditions booklet is met. Copies are available in the Kresge Housing Office. If your contract cancellation request is not approved, you are still required to pay for your room until your contract expires at the end of the school year in June. Although your housing guarantee is initially with the University, you sign your contract with Kresge College.

You Are Eligible for Housing...
If you are enrolled in classes and have not been barred from housing for judicial or financial reasons.

You Are Guaranteed Housing...
If you enter as a frosh you are guaranteed housing for two years. If you transfer in you are guaranteed housing for one year. There are some exceptions for extended guarantees for some EOP or certain Regent's Scholar students. Your guarantee lasts only if you do nothing to void your guarantee, including having no break in housing and no judicial or financial violations.

You Would Like to Move...

To a Different Room at Kresge...
If you are requesting a room switch within your apartment or to a different apartment at Kresge, you should first speak with your Community Assistant. S/He can help you with your next step. When no spaces are available, the CA can help you negotiate your needs with current housemates/roommates to create a better, immediate environment. Most opportunities for residents to move to other apartments will occur after the end of fall quarter. You will be required to write a brief statement detailing your current apartment situation, and what you are looking for in a new one.

To a Different University Sponsored Housing Facility...
If you would like to move to another college on campus, the Village, the University Town Center, or the UCSC Inn, you must request a housing cancellation from the Kresge Housing Office before approaching the other college or housing area to which you hope to relocate. Initially, you must file a contract cancellation request and receive the Housing Coordinator's approval before accepting a space at another UCSC housing facility. Be aware that the submitting of paperwork requesting a housing cancellation or to transfer to another college at UCSC does not guarantee approval to move.

Off Campus...
If you have medical or financial reasons for moving off campus, you must first request a housing contract cancellation from Kresge. Contract cancellations will not be approved unless they meet one of the criteria listed below. If your contract cancellation request is denied you are still required to pay for the space you occupy until the academic year ends or until we fill the space, regardless of whether or not you are living there.

*Remember, requesting a Housing Contract Cancellation, is just that; a request. You will not be approved for the cancellation unless you meet one of the criteria listed below.*

Housing Contract Cancellation...
Any student who, for any reason, is requesting to cancel their contract, must fill out a request for cancellation of housing form available in the Kresge Housing Office. Reasons for requesting cancellation may include academic reasons such as graduation, academic withdrawal, leaves of absence, Education Abroad Program attendance, transferring to another UCSC housing facility or transferring to another institution. If you are requesting a cancellation for any other reason aside from those listed above, your request must meet the criteria of one of the categories below in order for it to be considered:

Financial Hardship: It is required that you fill out an additional "Financial Advisory Form" when requesting a cancellation based on financial need. You will have to show how your financial situation has changed from the time you signed the Housing Contract up until the point you want to cancel the contract. You must demonstrate, specifically , how your financial situation was reduced and why.

Medical: You must provide a detailed explanation and verification from a doctor regarding your medical condition and how it would benefit your mental or physical health to cancel your contract and move elsewhere.

Other Reason: If you have another reason for requesting cancellation that is not financial or medical, you must provide a written reason with as much detail and supporting verification as possible.

Approval or Denial: Requesting a housing contract cancellation does not mean that it is automatically approved. It must be approved by both the Kresge Housing Office and the Campus Housing Office. You will be notified by the Kresge Housing Office on the outcome. If you are not approved you will be billed until the end of the school year, whether or not you remain living in your space. Students who rent a room off campus hoping their cancellation will be granted take a huge financial risk that isn't recommended. Paying rent in two places is costly!
