Student Art Projects Add Spice to Kresge's Walls

Kresge College has several murals that represent the social, cultural and academic experience of our students. Public art is encouraged and there is a community process for developing, proposing and installing murals.

College Murals Policy and Procedure
Policy - Kresge College encourages murals as an essential part of building our community and as an opportunity to enhance the academic experience. As public art, murals may be held to a different standard than other art, including standards that apply to the public presentation of the college to students, their families and other visitors. No art that is derogatory or demeaning to any individual or group will be considered. Only Kresge Students may apply. This policy applies only to college-funded facilities.

Approved locations - R1 Side Wall (2006), R3 Wall (2007), R6 Wall (2008), Recreation Courtyard Walls (2009)

Application Process - To apply Fill out and submit a Kresge College Murals Project form, along with a detailed sketch (16 x 20") of the suggested mural to the CPO for review by the Kresge Mural Committee
(DUE: Jan 18, 2005). The painted mural must adhere to the original approved design.

Muralists will be asked to have an academic link to their project. For example, an academic tie with the history of murals or the experience represented by the mural. The proposal should provide a sense of how you plan to execute the design: individually or with a group and a timeframe.

Selection - Selection of proposed murals will be made annually by a committee consisting of students, faculty and staff. The committee will be composed of the College Program Coordinator as chair of the committee, the Parliament Chair, 1 residential member, 1 at-large student member, 1 faculty member and 1 college staff member. The mural committee will bring the proposal to a Town meeting for community consultation.

The Town Meeting presentation should cover the project history and the academic links, cultural movements, etc. Design alterations may be suggested during this process.
Final approval rests with the CAO and the Provost.

Criteria - Acceptance of the mural is based on a variety of criteria, including creativity, content, technique and composition, subject, impact on community, compatibility with site (grounds and facilities) and enhancement of the college mission.

Funding - If a design is accepted, Kresge will provide paint, brushes, chalk, overhead projectors, and drop cloths.

Duration Murals are not considered permanent and the college reserves the right to paint over murals painted on walls and/or remove installed murals (after notifying the artist). Murals will be painted over on a five-year rotation per location. Core instructors will notify artists which location is to be painted each year prior to application submission. Incomplete murals may be painted over or removed.
