First, we'd like to introduce our new Academic Preceptor, Ursula Oberg. She replaces Stacey Sketo-Rosener, who is now working in the Chancellor's Office as the Academic Advising Coordinator for the campus. Before coming to Kresge, Ursula was an academic adviser for Crown and Merrill colleges, but she's familiar with Kresge, too, as a former UCSC literature major. Ursula will be heading up our excellent team of advisors, which includes Helen Mayer and Elizabeth Alsberg.
For a complete listing of all academic deadlines for the year, you can access a PDF version of the Printable Complete Calendar. The deadlines for the quarter are also listed at the front of the Schedule of Classes. [ Back to Top ]
Add/Drop/Swap Deadline: Wednesday, October 17
Wednesday, October 17 will be the last day to add a class, drop a class or switch one class with another. It could be argued that this is the most important deadline of the quarter! Be sure to check your enrollments before this date to make sure that you do not need to make any enrollment corrections. If you miss the deadline to ADD and you've been attending the class, you can still file an Add by Petition with a $10 fee until Nov. 7. If you miss the deadline to DROP, the course will permanently appear on your record. You should be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits each quarter unless you are on the University Part-Time Program. See an adviser if you do not qualify for the University Part-Time Program but need to take less than 12 credits. To take more than 19 credits, you may enroll via the Student Portal if your cumulative GPA is 3.0 or above.

Deadline to Change to Letter-Grade Option: Wednesday, October 17
Are your grading options correct? Take a second to double-check your enrollments to make sure you selected your letter grade options correctly. We see many students each quarter who think they enrolled correctly only to find that they received a "Pass" when they wanted a letter grade, or even a D or F when they thought they'd receive a "No Pass." See an adviser if you need help deciding which grading option to choose or if you have questions about your UCSC GPA or limits on the P/NP option. For specific instructions on how to change your letter grade option on the student portal, click here [ Back to Top ]
Deadline to Declare your Major/Minor: Thursday, October 25
This deadline applies to students who will reach 90 credits with this quarter's enrollments, or for those who want to be sure their major is in the system for winter quarter enrollment. (If you are a new transfer student, you are not required to declare until January 31, 2008, but you may want to declare now if you know your major.) If you will be a Junior (90 credits) next quarter and do not declare your major by the deadline, a hold will be placed on your winter enrollment. If you need to discuss your major options with an adviser, please make an appointment ASAP by phoning 459-2071. See below for steps to declare your major. [ Back to Top ]
How to Declare Your Major
You can declare your major at any time before your 90 credit deadline. (Be sure to check to see if your major department has any pre-requisites to declaring, however.) To begin the declaration process, visit the Undergraduate Advising Center to download an enterable PDF of the Declaration of Major form (Step 1 of the "Steps to Declare"). Then, using your Degree Progress Report and Student Advising Summary on the Student Portal, you will enter your completed General Education requirements, University requirements, College requirements, completed credits, and expected graduating quarter. Once completed, bring it to a college adviser to verify the information and sign your form, then take the form to your major department. Be sure to visit your department's web site to check for specific declaration procedures and possible mandatory declaration sessions. The typical navigation on a department website is to first click on the links for "Undergraduate Program" then "Declaring the Major" or "Advising." If you do not need to extend your enrollment, you will end the process with your department. Once approved by the department and entered into the system, your major will be officially declared!

Mailboxes at Kresge
ALL Kresge students, including those living off-campus, are assigned a college box which is used by a variety of offices on campus, including the Registrars Office, Student Business Services, Financial Aid, and the University Library. Most university mail is sent to your college box as well as copies of your approved petitions and correspondence from the college, departments, etc. It is essential for all students to check their college box frequently. If you have not done so already, please pick up your mailbox card as soon as possible. [ Back to Top ]
Education Abroad Program (EAP)
If you haven't considered the option of studying abroad, you owe it to yourself to learn about this invaluable learning opportunity. Information on EAP can be found on the EAP website , by visiting the EAP Office in Rm. 107 of the Classroom Unit Bldg, and by attending one of the EAP 101 Workshops (see below). Many programs do not require fluency in a foreign language or are taught in English (more information) and the cost can be comparable to attending UCSC. There are also many short-term programs available if you'd rather not be gone for a whole year. [ Back to Top ]
Rape Prevention Education and SHOP Move to Kresge
UCSC Rape Prevention Education has moved to Kresge! While the Health Center gets a retrofit and expansion, Rape Prevention Education will call Kresge home for up to possibly two years. Gillian Greensite says she is excited to be part of the Kresge community and looks forward to meeting as many Kresge students as possible. Besides offering support and advocacy for anyone who has ever been raped, or their friends and partners, Gillian offers a variety of great programs plus volunteer and peer education opportunities. Drop by to say hello and check out the resources at 153 Kresge, right by the fountain in the Piazetta opposite the College Office.
Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP) is settling into its new home on the Piazetta in the Kresge Recreation Building (#157). SHOP provides free, non-judgmental information, education, resources and support for UCSC students around issues related to Alcohol and other Drug Use, Sexuality and Sexual Health, Stress Management and other health concerns. Students can get involved with SHOP through Internship, Volunteer, and Peer Education programs. They plan to host an Open House for Kresge College and other friends sometime in November -- look for details. In the meantime, stop by and visit the office and sign up to be on the e-mail list for information about upcoming events and volunteer opportunities. [ Back to Top ]
