I'm Sick/ I'm Injured
How do I know if I need medical care?
An illness or injury that is unusual or unusually serious for you may indicate the need for a professional diagnosis and treatment. Many minor conditions can be cared for at home with self monitoring, rest and over the counter products. You may read up on common problems and see if home treatment is appropriate. Most common reasons college students seek Medical Care.
How can I get more information on medical conditions and care needed?
Our patient handouts on most common medical conditions are listed under the Information heading on the Navigation Bar. See patient education handouts or check online at responsible websites like www.goaskalice.columbia.edu, www.aafp.org, www.cdc.org., or www.webmd.com.
Off Campus Medical Facilities
If you do visit another facility and are told to follow up with us, please ask that facility to give you or fax (831) 459-3546 us the records of that visit. Also, if you have UCSC student insurance (i.e., UHIP, GSHIP), you will want to contact the insurance office at 459.2389 or insure@ucsc.edu so they can help you with any bills you may incur.
If you require transportation, you could either call a taxi or use your student ID to take one of the metro buses passing by the facility. Routes listed below in bold can be taken from the UCSC campus. For more information about the metro bus, see the Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District web site
If I’m sick, should I stay home from class/activities?
You should always try to attend class unless you are too ill to go, are running a fever of 101 or higher or are instructed by health care professional that you should not go. One exception to this for the 2009/2010 Academic year is if you believe that you have the flu. Please see our Influenza Self-Care document for specific instructions.
Excuses for missing classes are not given at Student Health for minor illnesses. Students who are hospitalized or otherwise incapacitated for a prolonged time should contact their professors and ask their medical care provider for needed documentation. See No Note Policy effective Fall 2007
