¥ Social Committee – meeting immediately after the GSA meeting: budget, activities

Committee Needs

¥ CPB (Chelsey) – Meeting every Thursday 8-12.  Very critical that we have a rep, has big influence on how money spend.  Pay is $600.  We are willing to have individual serving on this committee come once a month.  Chelsey asks if anyone interested.  Had one person raiser their hand, will speak to person after meeting.  Chelsey asks reps to solicit people from department.

¥ Chelsey – reps that donÕt have a committee need to sign up

¥ Nick – We need 2 people for judicial committee.  Nick doesnÕt know yet how often they meet (James volunteered)

Rep Confirmation

¥ Troy Alamn (DAMN) – confirmed by Chelsey

¥ Sheldon Logan (CAD) – confirmed by Chelsey

EVP Report (Teresa)

¥ SOCC (Nov 10-12th) : UCSA funded conference that brings all 10 campuses (grads & undergrads) to UCSC.  First time UCSC has hosted conference and had grad components.  Tickets for all grad students are being paid for.  We have 50 guaranteed slots, but have to be claimed by Tuesday.  Soliciting help from dept reps to get information out to the depts. Chelsey hands out posters and flyers to reps.  Interested grads need to email TeresaÉ available until Tuesday.  Any rep who would like a ticket can come talk to Teresa after a meeting.  Need people to propose workshops for SOCC.  Several workshops have been proposed.  Can propose additional workshops by going to website and downloading form and submitting 100 word proposal.

¥ Retention & Recruitment

¥ Surviving in Grad School

¥ Diversifying Research (we need someone to facilitate this)

What we need from grad reps is to send a personalized email to your grad department.  Also, to post posters and distribute flyers.  Another way they can help is to propose and facilitate workshops.  Can also help at the event.  Teresa encourages grads to come.  Schedule is on the back of flyer.  Deadline to turn in/propose workshops is tomorrow, Friday.  We need a lot of grad orientation workshops.  Got monies from AGEP, Student Affairs, GSA, Grad Council, Education Dept.  Teresa encourages reps to ask departments for money to contribute to conference.

¥ Regents Meeting (Jan 16th & 17th) Teresa wants to take advantage of travel money to send grad students to meeting in LAÉ or SF?

¥ Voter Registration: grads need to organize their own table.  UCSC has not ever, ever, ever met a goal.  Teresa will try and put together a committee to focus on voter registration.

¥ GSA t-shirts, $10/each, with cute little slugs.  Grad asks if we can put excess money towards free t-shirts?  Teresa and Chelsey agree we can talk about that.

Presidential Report (Chelsey)

¥ Diversity Dinner (Nov 28th) Sponsored by grad division and open to all students.  Held at the University Ctr.  GSA will also send out emails to remind. Want to use SOCC outcome as a springboard for this event.  Start with a breakout session before dinner, then have a roundtable with the Blumenthal, Ashifs & Sloan.  This is the first time weÕve had this opportunity to bring our ideas and impress them.  Chelsey encourages grads to be themselves and say what they want to say, but also be aware of the effect

¥ Website has some many problems.  We need someone to gut the thing and redo it.  Chelsey wants to put forth to the council to increase the salary of webmaster this quarter to $100.  Chelsey asks Chris if he can complete this in a quarter?  Chris says he can complete it by the first or second week of winter quarter.  Motion to pay $300 to webmaster by Teresa, 2nd by KirstenÉ we donÕt have quorum.  We will have to present at next meeting

¥ Grads donÕt get paid until 1 month into the quarter and canÕt get money until fees are paid.  Chelsey wants to write a page to Sloan so that folks already signed up will get paid immediately (Bob Hastings supports this).

¥ TAPS – Talked to Dean Sloan about her priorities.  Sloan mentioned that the grad college is not one of their top priorities.  Chelsey told her weÕd like something in return: park close to our buildings after 5PM and on weekends for free?  We had this before and it was taken away from us. We donÕt have escort service on campus.  This is really important for safety. For students who live on campus (grad housing) they have to pay for a permit already.  Maybe make it structured so that grads register their car, get a free sticker so that ungrads canÕt take advantage of this.  For those that are interested email Chelsey.

¥ We donÕt have quorum, but Chelsey was going to request the additional $250 for SOCC.  Teresa suggests reps go ask departments for money.  Teresa will send out letters out to reps so they can go ask department.  Chelsey says that the GSA should still support this and give money!  We can get the money after the fact as well.

Meeting Adjourned because we donÕt have quorum.
