GSA Meeting Minutes--October

I. Approval of Agenda and Minutes
Agenda and minutes were approved with some minor changes.
II. Virginia Draper, Lecturer in Writing--Lecturers'
Strike
Four handouts
Announced strike on October 14th and 15th and discussed negotiations
of Union and University and issues addressed including hourly work week,
allocation of resources, benefits and review process
Asked graduate students for support including joining picket line
III. Elections

V. Committee Reports

The GSC Governance Board in process of seeking new vendor to replace
Whole Earth Restaurant, hopes are to have one in place by winter;
there is a bid review committee headed by Vice Chancellor and includes
2 grads, 1 undergrad, 1 faculty, and 1 staff member (Director of
Dining and Housing Services), rewriting contract for bid that is
going out this Sunday, ad postings in Sentinel, SJ Mercury, and
SF Chronicle, vendor has to already be in business in California.,
anyone with input can email her at ruth@scipp.ucsc.edu
and asked that folks take survey on webpage
www2.gradcommons.ucsc.edu, proposal deadline is end of October
2002.

WEAVE (Women's grad student and post-doc support group through Center
Pacheco and Women's Center), this Tuesday is the 1st meeting from
6-7:30 PM, childcare provided, contact Wendy at wrw@cats.ucsc.edu;
Social Committee - beginning of year GSA party had an estimated
400 attendees.

The GSHIP Committee announced that physical therapy and mental health
care services were doubled from last year, still needs to follow
up on "Frequency asked questions" sheet. Community
Services Committee had annual beach clean up day at Seabright
Beach last weekend.

Social Committee set-up tentative dates for Surfing class
on November 3rd and 4th with a cost of $10 per grad (usually $30 but
GSA subsidizes costs) and for day hike on November 9th or 16th in
Big Basin or Andrew Molera State Park, suggestions for kayaking made,
also need another grad student to work with Rec. department and happy
hour organizer needed too. New GSA website is up, needs help
with campus resource page for "insider tips" email him at
machledt@cats.ucsc.edu |

Career Center Graduate Student Advisor Position Committee--there is a
job applicant that will most likely be offered the position in November.
CUMAC--the campus pesticide policy is currently under review,
first time in about 30 years. Alumni Association Award Committee
is awarding Martha Medoza the Outstanding Alumni Award this year.

reminded us that we need to ask grads to fill out post travel form
with receipts for travel awards, Dave will put a link to the form
on the website |

announced that GSA meeting minutes will be posted on GSA website for approval
at next meeting

is still sending out emails regarding meetings, committees, event
announcements, etc. |

announced meeting with regents and Chancellor Greenwood, the dissertation
guidelines review process, and the postponed town hall meeting on
graduate funding and discussed how this meeting got started. Because
of lack of response from deans of all divisions meeting was postponed,
Lee wants to set up meeting with grad dean and grad council chairs,
a number of members made suggestions including forming a committee
to work on this, Emily moved to make a committee for this purpose
(perhaps calling it Adhoc Committee on Grad Funding Crisis),
there were no objections. Committee members are Rebecca, Mike, and
Greg. Lee also discussed ChancellorŐs recommendations for this academic
year including private donor funding for grads. |
VII. Addendums
Budget Requests--Dave requested money to purchase Dreamweaver for computer
in GSC so that he can update website, motion for funds up to $200 for
purchase of Dreamweaver were approved with no objections.
Lecturers' Strike--Joni agreed to draft an email to grads requesting
support of strike, will send draft to Emily to have sent to GSA by next
Monday for feedback before sending to all grads.
Office Election By-Laws--Lee suggested changing by-laws to hold officer
elections at 2nd to last (May) GSA meeting of the year, will include in
next meetingŐs agenda items.
