III. Committee Reports
| Brandon |
The Grad Student Commons has a TV, DVD and VCR available for use with
study rooms. The governance board is soliciting people to
sit on the committee beginning in March. The board is currently
finalizing a brochure on the grad commons to be distributed to grad
students and is conducting a contest for mug design. Profits
from the sale of mugs could go to a number of uses, including travel
grants. The Whole Earth hopes to have its liquor license by
the end of the month and the omni-lock, to give grads 24 hour access
to the grad commons, should be installed by the end of the winter
quarter. Also, art moulding will be installed so art can be
displayed in the grad commons.

The GSA has approved 28 travel grants so far this year and that flyers will
be sent out Feb. 6th for the next round.

| Dave |
The social committee is moving forward with a winetasting trip March
2, and 2 surfing classes. Both classes filled quickly and
received good reviews. Suggestions for a night at Boche Cellar
were added to a discussion which suggested that happy hours be held
on campus.

| Sara |
The Single Parents Action Network (SPAN) is planning a benefit
for hardship funds for summer rent braks and books. The women’s
center will put on a photography installation and poetry reading.
A new proposal to allow people with single parents to join SPAN is
being considered. Veronica Toledo is the new SPAN president
and Kimberly Madison is now Secretary. |
| Allison |
She has collected 40 “horror stories” to bring to the GSHIP committee.
She met with Marta to organize the complaints into broad categories
detailing communication problems versus coverage problems.
She met with key players and found out that med premiums will probably
go up 9-15% this year, just to maintain current coverage.
They are moving towards sending prescriptions electronically, and
heard her comments on improving mental health, dental and physical
therapy coverage, as well as extending coverage through the summer
months for prescriptions. She reported that the board was
“stunned” with her presentation, though action is uncertain.
The insurance cheat sheet has stalled for the time being.

| Emily |

SPAN at UC-Berkeley. |

approved a motion to spend up to $300 to frame and mount the photo.
Heather agreed to send out a dedication e-mail. The GSA also

the Sinseimer fire, but no one requested funds.

V. New Business
Brandon asked what the GSA take is for upcoming student fee referendums.
The consensus was reached that if a transportation referendum is proposed,
the GSA will support it.
Yan Zhang announced a Chinese New Year’s party for February 11th
in the Grad Commons. The event is for Chinese and non-Chinese students
and includes a component to educate people about Chinese culture.
She requested support for the party. The GSA approved $400 to go
to funding this event, provided that the GSA was recognized as a co-sponsor.
Sara requested funding on behalf of the organizers of the Women of Color Film
Festival. After reviewing last year’s grant, the GSA approved
a motion to offer $1500 to fund this event.
Heather requested funding on behalf of the Chicano Latino Research Center (CLRC)
for $250 for food for an opening reception for an upcoming conference.
(See attached funding request). The GSA approved a motion to fund
$250 for this purpose and to become a co-sponsor of the event.
Sara presented a request for funding on behalf of the Women of Color Research
Cluster to fund a series of upcoming events. The above-mentioned
CLRC conference was among these events. No further funding was approved
for the other Women of Color events.
Emily proposed that we offer a Tax workshop for grad students, and agreed to
find out how much it would cost to hire an accountant for a presentation.
Further decisions would be made over e-mail.
It was agreed to add a discussion of increasing Travel grant funds to next month's
agenda.
