Eligibility for Veteran's Benefits

There are two types of veteran's benefits: benefits for veterans and benefits for their dependents:

Veterans
If you are a veteran who served on continuous active duty for 181 days or more after January 13, 1955, you may qualify for educational benefits under the G. I. Bill. You may also qualify for educational benefits if you served at least 90 aggregate days on active
duty after September 10, 2001, and you meet one of the following conditions:

  • you are still on active duty
  • you were honorably discharged from active duty
  • you were released from active duty and placed on the retired list or temporary disability retired list
  • you were released from active duty and transferred to the Fleet Reserve or Fleet Marine Corps Reserve
  • you were released from the active duty for service in a reserve component of the Armed Forces.

Dependents of Veterans
If you are a dependent of a veteran who died or is permanently disabled as a result of military duty, you also may be eligible for educational benefits.

California Residents: The dependent child, spouse or unmarried surviving spouses of a service-connected disabled or deceased veteran may be entitled to tuition and fee waiver benefits at any campus of the California State University system, University of California or a California Community College.

To obtain eligibility requirements and assistance in applying for these valuable benefits, please contact the UCSC Registrar's Office, UCSC Veteran Services, your local County Veterans Service Office or a Veterans Administration GI Bill counselor (see phone number at right)
